Electronics project clean out. Pay it forward box.
« on: April 09, 2017, 04:49:05 pm »
I will soon be doing a clean out of my mini lab.   My space will be turning into an Art studio for a few years and I need to liquidate everything I haven't touched in awhile.
I  have lots of random stuff....  dev boards, parts, stuff left over from abondoned commercial projects.    I do not want to throw it away or try to sell.     The idea here is to keep the stuff out of a landfill

I was hoping to pack it in flat rate USPS boxes and ship to random addresses with the hope that some one else would find it useful and then forward everything along.  Ideally I would like to get help with the shipping cost but that isn't too critical if the finds a good home.

Let me know if there is interest and I will post pictures and such.

I would suggest:

1. Set your location flag to USA
2. Start a topic for the clearout,  to list what you are offering, with a photo of each proposed box, one post per box, and another for all questions and bids.
3. Ask bidders NOT to PM you or post in your listing topic.
4. A bid may be an offer of payment or 100 words to encourage you to donate a box.
5. Anyone who wants other than continental USA flat rate box shipping must pay for courier collection to be scheduled at your convenience.
6. Close bids on any box 24H after the first bid on it, flagging the original listing post as 'Sold', and making a "Sold/Donated to ...." post in the bids topic.
7. Blacklist anyone who cant/wont comply with your simple rules

As I'm not continental USA, I don't have any skin in the game but IMHO this two topic open bid system will be both interesting and fair, but still easy for those who aren't interested to ignore.  You might as well use this topic for bids/Q&A.

I am in high school and is setting up my lab. I would be interested in linerar & logic ICs, dev boards  and passives you want out. I can pay shipping. Feel free to PM me.
Just me and my scope.

It's like Freecycle; much better than tossing usable stuff in the bin. Definitely post more info. Lots of people here with varied interests.

Ian has good suggestions for managing it.

I'm interested heavily in ICs (especially things like memory or controllers/microcontrollers and dev boards) but other things would be interesting too. It depends mostly on shipping cost.

Hi! Very hard to buy parts here, hence I am interested. I am interested in HF stuff and ICs. I also play with high voltage stuff like tesla coils. I am trying to build one. Please let me know if you are willing to donate.

If it's shiny -I'm in.

Dangerous Prototypes did a thing like this.
It was a box-o-stuff that travelled around the world.
You took out what you wanted, put some stuff in and forwarded it on.
It vanished.

DP has since kind of fizzled out.

These things do tend to fizzle if they aren't designed to grow, especially as those recipients that need it the most will usually have little to contribute themselves. A better idea is to have participants promise that *IF* they are in a position to do so they will add their own lots to the clearout listing topic on a similar basis.   Hopefully recipients who don't have stuff to clear will bid generously enough that on average it will be cost-neutral for each sender, even with freebee boxes to the truly deserving.

Unfortunately, it costs $10/pound to mail things to you from the US.  US -> Canada isn't much better.   The goodie box doesn't really make sense internationally.

I'm interested, my Nephew has been showing interest in electronics and I've been putting together a starter kit for him to mess around with. I personally could use a few things but he would be the priority in regards to this.

The thing like that that I know of is TGIMBOEJ, which seems still active—see the list of boxes on that website. Hackaday also did one for a while called the Traveling Hacker Box, but that seems to have ended recently. This could become something like that (maybe through TGIMBOEJ) if ehughes wants to do it that way.
I refuse to use AD's LTspice or any other "free" software whose license agreement prohibits benchmarking it (which implies it's really bad) or publicly disclosing the existence of the agreement. Fortunately, I haven't agreed to that one, and those terms are public already.

Depends on what it is, for me!

I got started with 4 mini boxes with some random dev boards.

For now I will be doing smaller boxes and curate some useful things.    Each box may have some random surprises in it.
