Fluke 87 Display
« on: January 23, 2013, 05:29:18 pm »
I have an original Fluke 87 with cracked LCD glass, several segments of the display will not change state/turn on. I have replaced the zebra strips with no change, I'm pretty sure the crack is the problem. If anyone has a *cheap* display or parts unit going spare please get in touch.

I was almost going to suggest you the screens from Fluke 83 or 85, then I checked the service manual and there is little difference in those with 87 one.

You need Fluke part number: 832188
This will probably fit on a 83 or 85 too but not other way around.
All the LCD’s are marked with U5 in the manual so don’t buy one only marked with U5, to make it sure you should avoid part number 782763 since that one is for 83 and 87.

I would make a ebay search query with “Fluke 832188” and wait till you get mail when it’s listed.

Only difference is DUTY text and two arrows at the graphic bar and the bar it self so far I can see:

I have an original 87 and I replaced the LCD with a new one from the 80-series III generation.  It has bigger and bolder digits and all the same annunciators except DUTY.

For what it's worth, the printed manual that came with my 87 explicitly states the DUTY annunciator is not used (pg. 16).  And the arrows at the end of the analog bar graph are not mentioned or shown in any of the diagrams.  They don't exist on the gen-III LCD, either.

Thanks for the advice, I'll keep an eye out for an 80-series display.

I'm bidding on some eBay 87 parts right now. Unfortunately I can't find a European seller for the case screws either - they seem to be an odd pitch. This guy won't ship to the EU and won't answer question through eBay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Fluke-New-Multimeter-Bottom-Case-Screw-Set-3-83-85-86-87-88-All-Series-/330776787024?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4d03d53850#shId

This meter will be pretty Frankensteined  when it's usable...

ModemHead is totally right there, I got the printed manual which came with my 87 too and on the first page those arrows and the DUTY is not even shown, so any 80’s series LCD can work.
To make sure I just turned on my 87 and there is no arrow what so ever in screen either, I think only the graphical bar is divided differently that’s all.

I just scanned these for you:

ModemHead's picture of it.  You can clearly see how mich bigger it is compared to the "non naked" original 85.

a-fluke won't ship internationally including Canada.

I have always wanted to go to Home Depot or some hardware store and find an experienced sales person to see if they can find a match for the Fluke case screws.

Did you see this one? You got one hour and it ships to europe:

Yep, I've been bidding. Hoping to nab that as shipping isn't too terrible.

You are also totally right, the service manual shows two different part numbers, one for the 83/85 and one for the 87.  It also shows two different manufacturer's part numbers, LS393C and LS394E.  But I don't really know why that is.  :-//

I'm going to resurrect this thread.

I didn't find a replacement LCD, but I did end up buying another "as-is" Fluke 87 with faded display recently. After cleaning the zebra strips, PCB and glass that one is working great. The new meter was also missing case screws but I found an ebay seller who was willing to sell me enough to complete both meters with some spares left over. I swapped the LCD modules between my two 87s and found that the good and bad LCDs behave the same in both meters, so I am certain the cracked LCD is the cause of the problem. I have noticed that LCDs for the 87V are widely available, does anyone know if they can be used in an original 87?

The service manual for the original 87 and 87V have two different part numbers for U5.

original 87 U5 = 782763
Fluke 87v U5 = 2065213

Yep, I'm not sure if that tells me anything about compatibility. As some people have mentioned, there are several LCD models that can be swapped between 80 series meters, I just don't know if the 87V is one of them.

I don't think it can be swapped easily as 87V LCD is more complicated than the 87, just download the 87V user manual to see for your self at the LCD when its all lit up.

I just scanned these for you:

And 87V

It looks like they are different enough that they will not be compatible, shame.
