BDunham, I'll keep your kind offer in my back pocket if experimenting with what I have lying around falls flat.
I don't think it's a very demanding application - I want to add the "Restore Signal" function to my low-serial-number 8443A Tracking Generator. Normally it builds the output signal starting with a 3MHz crystal oscillator, mixing it with the various oscillators in the spectrum analyzer. Restore Signal turns off the crystal and substitutes the 3MHz IF signal from the spectrum analyzer, so the 8443 puts out a strong, levelled wave at whatever frequency is coming in through the SA's passband. To add this feature we need to amplify then limit the 3MHz IF signal to drive the mixer. HP did this with a cascode then an emitter follower then a differential pair. One diff pair collector goes to the diode ring modulator in parallel with the disabled crystal oscillator output. The cascode and emitter follower are HP's favorite NPN, 1854-0071, while the diff pair is 1854-0019. Since we're only running at 3MHz, I figure the important characteristics are Cob, gain, and power output, and we don't actually need hundreds of megahertz Ft even though we get that too.
