On the local craigs list here in the SF bay area, a person has a new in the box HP 8566B spectrum analyzer. Price is too high for me, $5,995 and I also have a pretty good specimen.

I think I would do it for 2k and sell my three others. 6k is too high considering I bought one of mine for $500 and it is in great shape.

I have a hankering for old gear. I would love to be there to power it on for the first time. But sometimes things don't age well in the box for so long. Who know about the humidity, where it was stored, etc.

I agree, it's 'internal health' is an interesting question.
I suppose the units which have been used through their life have been 'genetically selected' to be made from parts which will last a long time in the conditions they were used/stored in - either by luck when they were built or by progressive replacement of faulty bits.
