Looking for a tool to make jumpers
« on: December 07, 2012, 03:47:28 am »
I am looking for a tool that I saw in an old Telco training video. I was a tool that measured the distance between two holes on a circuit board and had a holder on the other side that allowed you to bend a wire to that exact measurement. It had handles not unlike a pair of needle nose pliers. I am a tool nut and I would love a pair of these. Please help if possible.

I think what your referring to is a lead forming tool. They come in all different sorts, with varying degrees of automation, quality and cost. Have a search around and see what fits your needs and budget.

Cheers

I have two pairs of needle nose pliers on my bench, one small, one large. Because the jaws taper, you can draw lines across the inside of the jaws with a permanent marker which correspond to whole numbers of 0.1". Makes forming wire jumpers up to 5 holes long really quick.

I suppose actually you could get a triangular pie-slice block of plastic or wood or something and scribe lines across it up to whatever length you want...

RS has two tools, catalog numbers 545-109 and 545-086. The first one will bend leads, second one will bend the leads and cut them to the desired lenght.
Another one, that I have in my lab from about 1980 and is in daily use,  a really very good tool, for both components and jumpers:
