Toroidal transformer kits
« on: January 21, 2016, 02:56:35 pm »
Does anyone know a UK supplier of toroidal transformer kits, i.e. a core with a pre-wound primary on which you put your own secondary. I've found these: https://toroid.com/Transformer-Products/Transformer-kits but they're USA based and they don't offer 240 V primaries. Any suggestions before I phone around the various custom transformer suppliers (who presumably have piles of such things waiting to have a secondary wound when someone places and order).

My application requires winding a 1 turn secondary to test some high-current measurement equipment and this is a nice, elegant way of doing it. Better than messing around with arc welders anyway.

just buy any toroid of the right size and ignore the secondary, the center hole should be plenty big for a sing turn

That's my backup plan but I am still a bit concerned about winding space, mainly because no-one specifies what's left in the middle. I will need to get a substantial amount of copper up it (and might and up with 2 or 3 turns).

It's certainly a possibility.

Most toroid secondaries don't have much winding thickness -not enough to be worth the bother of unwinding them.
Youtube channel:Taking wierd stuff apart. Very apart.
Mike's Electric Stuff: High voltage, vintage electronics etc.
Day Job: Mostly LEDs
