Wanted: Project box for 5cm x 5cm PCBs??
« on: March 18, 2013, 05:01:45 am »
Since I've been getting boards done at Iteed, I seem to have a whole lot of 5cm x 5cm PCBs laying around.  It's kind of amazing what you can fit in that size two layer board with a little practice.  My question now is where to find a project box for a PCB that size.  I can't be the only one in this boat.  What do you guys use for a project box for 5cm x 5cm boards?

Eh.  I'm pretty much looking for a "Beige compatible case"  :)  I'm already using two blank PCBs on the top and bottom with the standoffs thing for some temporary protection, but it really isn't a good case solution.

There are a lot of cases for bigger boards, but I haven't found any for this smaller 5cm x 5cm size even though it seems like a lot of people are pushed in that direction by the cheap board houses.

In Oz at the retail stores they sell "Jiffy" boxes, basically a very cheap generic box.  The smallest, the UB5 variant (which is also what Dave uses for the uCurrent) has an internal size of just over 50mm x ~80mm.  They are very handy and would fit a 5x5 board well with enough room to route cables off the board at either end.  They are pretty much the epitome of the beige case (completely non descript, very plain.)

Surely they're not an Oz only thing?

I've had very good experience with Hammond cases. They provide complete 3D models on their website for all their cases, they even provide a 3D model of the circuit board shape, so you can import that into your ECAD and you don't need to go through the trouble of drawing your own board shape.

I attached an image of the whole PCB and case assembly from Solidworks. I also had the PCBs manufactured and I soldered all of the components, but during testing, I found some design flaws, so I can't really show you the finished product. What I can tell you, is that I tried putting the assembled circuit board into the case, and it fit like a glove.

The circuit is currently being redesigned, so you might hear about the project after I am completely finished with it.
<fellbuendel> it's arduino, you're not supposed to know anything about what you're doing
<fellbuendel> if you knew, you wouldn't be using it
