« on: May 10, 2020, 11:20:54 am »
My "new" fluke 8840a came with a broken VFD, would like to "repair" it

Have been looking at ebay and found none
Please comment or PM me if you have one or info about this unubtonium display :)

Your best would be to find another used one on Ebay with picture  on a "powered on" meter, and tell the seller to pack soft clothing on the front panel to protect it ??

I did on a few purchases, and the sellers where great to accept the requests ...

Not sure if the 8842 vfd is the same pinout

and a thread of someone whos made an franken meter display

I believe the 8842 and 8840 do have the same VFD, but you can google-ful some old manuals and verify the same p/n.  These displays are indeed unobtanium and will be expensive if you can find one.  My solution was to buy a parts unit and recoup some of the expense by selling the remaining parts.
A 3.5 digit 4.5 digit 5 digit 5.5 digit 6.5 digit 7.5 digit DMM is good enough for most people.

Thank you for suggestion
Will "watch" some listing on "broken" 8840a

Btw, is it really swappable / Plug and Play between those 8840a and 8842a VFD?

I can check for you when I get a chance but I'm pretty sure that:

1.  The actual VFD is the same but
2.  The board that it is attached to is not, because the it is integrated with the button controls and the 8842a has extra buttons.

Thus you would have to unsolder the old one and solder in the new.

Do a checking on those pcb is pita, as long as both of VFD is same it is enough info for me :)
I have some skill with soldering/desoldering, i'm fine with swapping a "component/parts"

My job now is waiting some good listing regarding those "broken" 8840a/8842a on ebay

Already got a "7 segment" display board replacement at Taobao
Not all "indicator" onboard but work like a charm

Can you give a link to the product?  I suspect there is some demand here for those.
