2000 F, credic card super capacitor?
« on: September 04, 2015, 09:22:39 am »
hey everybody!

I came across this video by Robert Murray-Smith :

he shows the Super Capacitor "EESD" rated at 2 000 Farads in a tiny package,

where compared to, for example, Maxwell http://www.maxwell.com/images/documents/Product_Comparison_Matrix_3000489_2.pdf

which have much worse power density.

Is it legitimate?

Assuming its a 3v supercap
Assuming the motor will spin down to maybe 1V
So that's 2V of usable range

4 hours is 240minutes or 14400sec

2V / 14400sec = 0.138mV per second

so
capacity = I/change in voltage

0.120A / 0.000138V = 864 farads

Thats really quick and dirty and doesnt count for the fact that the motor will draw much less at 1V than 3V.
so 2000F is probably not that far off.

Getting 2000F at 3V from something that size is an order of magnitude better than your typical maxwell boost cap.  So i really hope its true, but i doubt it.

He doesn't have that typical "feel" of someone trying to sell a free energy device.
More like a legit engineer. So that's promising.

well, he seems to be legitimate as far as first page of google goes:

A hybrid capacitor has a much higer energy density than a normal double layer capacitor:

Combining the ultra-high-current capability of capacitors with the volatility of a lithium battery? That doesn't sound too safe... what happens if you short one? :o

Ohh.. Maybe after watching countless / worthless videos of someone crushing/destroying/drowning iPhones and the likes.. we ll get to see the same with a tesla car!!!  :-DD

Cant wait for it!!!

(Wonder what the video on youtube will earn for the content provider though....  >:D )

and we are this stupid
then....

IMO he took a lithium polymer battery, covered it with kapton tape, and here you go - SUPERCAPACITOR.

No. LIC is different. Go for the German Wikipedia page, it has much more detail.

It is also unfortunately stupid expensive now.

He calls is a capacitor and then touts that it is rechargeable - nice.

It will be nice to learn a bit more about ESR, max discharge current, data related to lifetime, and temperature.

My mentor showed me how to parallel a NiCad battery with an electrolytic capacitor back in the 1970s to get an effect similar to a low ESR capacitor with a very large capacitance back in the 1970s.  What is old is new again.

If it is a battery, then it will have a severely limited life compared to a capacitor. You will not be able to discharge to zero without permanent damage, fire, or leaking.

It won't take much to test it. If it is a 2000F cap with reasonable ESR/discharge rate better than 20A, sign me up for a few thousand immediately.
