"Beep" for voltage measurements in DMMs.
« on: July 11, 2012, 09:38:40 am »
Yesterday I faced a condition measuring some voltages in a weird position on a racing boat that wouldn't allow me to monitor the display. I used the min/max option to view the voltages. I had to crawl down and stand up multiple times.

Is there any DMM (is it common and just I haven't come across it?) that you can set a voltage level, compare the values and produce a beep if ">=" (like the Agilent that beeps when a measure is competed in data logging mode)? I know the is DMM with removable display.

Alexander.

Depending on the voltages (I assume is either 12 or 24V range), you may try an automotive DMM
However, if you are comfortable in making electronic circuits you could assemble your own based on a comparator and a 555 (for the tone generation). It would be a mix between the comparator and the tone generator of the two links below:

Hey, you could even get fancier and generate a different tone per voltage by using the multi-level circuit below:

Oh, the "whys" of the datasheets... The information is there not to be an axiomatic truth, but instead each speck of data must be slowly inhaled while carefully performing a deep search inside oneself to find the true metaphysical sense...

What about a 'talking multimeter' several projects on the web using text to speech or PWM speech
