The O.P. reminds me of the kid throwing a tantrum lying on the floor kicking his feet next to the supermarket checkout because mummy has just told him she's not buying the sweets he's grabbed . . . .

I had a similar vision.  The fact that they used the word "attacked" speaks volumes.  "Challenged" would be as far as I would have gone ... but, then, if you're going to offer a technical criticism in a forum with technical members, you better expect some dialogue - and some differing views.

As I see it, the dummy spit/tantrum simply means they are closed to the possibility that they might not have all the facts and/or their understanding is lacking.  IMHO, such people are simply demonstrating their own ignorance and insecurities - and are going to have a hard time learning.

... and they are going to alienate themselves from the very community that could provide the greatest benefit.

I think this is symptomatic of the younger generation forumites who started out on social media then join special interest forums like this one without understanding the culture and nettiquette.  A forum like this is a far far kinder place than the sci.electronics groups in their heyday.

If you didn't count a resident nutcase who abused everyone, and a user who was so known for his bot-like replies that someone actually wrote a bot script to simulate him (http://www.sensationbot.com/jschat.php?db=rodspeed), I was the highest poster on the aus.electronics group at one point.

FWIW, RSW died some years ago IIRC.

Anyone who started out posting on unmoderated USENET knows damm well you think three times before pressing 'Send' as that was (for most of its life) a write once medium, due to the cancelbot/repoosterbot war making cmsg cancel ineffective.   Only real lUsers used the same program for mail and news as that vastly increased the risk of idiocies like publicly posting your bank details or other personal info you'd rather not have out there!   You also either got pretty thick skinned or left USENET with your tail between your legs as if you goofed on a technical issue then were too stiff necked defending your clearly erroneous point of view, it would be likely to trigger an apocalyptic no-holds-barred flame war.

Started out on Usenet? I *still* actively read and post there since 1997 or so.  :)

The RodBot? Not sure if it's the original I guess, but he was just posting in S.E.D. which I know you're active in in the "OT: Gay Nightclub Shooting" thread. He's also still posting in aus.electronics and uk.d-i-y as well. Sure reads the same, anyway...

Just like this guy.

I used to see his posts in SED. I kind of thought he might be BAW, same type of posting style. BAW was a bit tamer here, but not by much.

He's still posting to Usenet. At least Phil is pretty knowledgeable, unlike Rod Speed who just thinks he knows everything.  ::)
