best electronics app for android?
« on: January 16, 2015, 06:51:14 am »
So I'm moving from the iphone world to android, and theres an app I use quite a lot called Electronic toolbox, it has many reference tools such as parameters for cable guages, common connector pinouts, smd code chart, and a large database on many discrete semiconductors (FETs,Transistors etc.) and I wonder if there is something equivalent on the android market I can buy.
I already found RF & Microwave Toolbox which contains quite a lot of tools I require but it's missing a lot of the things I mentioned above.

any help guys?

ElectroDroid sounds like what you want. It's the premier electronics related app on Android.
Though it lacks the FET database, it does have a PIC and AVR database that you can add on IIRC.

There is also AnyCircuit Every Circuit. There is a free version and a paid version. I think though that ElectroDroid is closer to what you want.

An absolute must... RealCalc. The free version is very good, but the full version is even better. I use it every day at work.

+1 for electrodroid. Really handy for pinouts and virtually everything else.

I use both electrodroid and realcalc. Highly recommended.

I don't even miss my hard HP calc anymore (except the soft programs).  For those I use droid48 now, the HP48G emulator.

But even though I have both realcalc and droid48, I almost always use realcalc. It's a real nice RPN calculator.

Tried to install electrodriod on my nexus 5 but not enough memory. Must be a memory hog. I will have to deleted a few eevblog and amp hour podcasts to make room.

I haven't used it in a while but I do remember Electrodroid being a really neat program.  I also have programs that are AVR and PIC parts databases.  The Digikey application is also useful for looking things up.

I've got Electrodroid installed but honestly i hardly ever use it. One app i do use a lot at the bench is Calculator++. If you are used to graphics calculators that take strings as input (as opposed to a typical scientific calculator) you will love it.

It's only taking up 15.83MB on my Nexus 5. Not exactly what i'd consider a memory hog when Facebook etc frequently bloat out to over 100MB.

Note, the free version is so limited that you can't really do anything with it.

Electrodroid seems okay, but it has flaws. I yet have to find a well rounded electronics Android app, using tons is sometimes worse than using a website, computer or paper reference.

Most apps are really half-baked.

- SandScan looks promising, but outdated and not works good here.

- Electronics Toolkit has a really interesting set, but unable to do useful things such as show resistor color codes when entering a resistance value. It has a list of 4000 series ICs, but not of 74000 series ICs.

- ElectroDroid seems overall better ( you can do resistor reverse lookup) , but lacks stuff such as 4000 series ICs.

- ElectroBuddy seems nicely done with a nicer UI, but lacks 4000 series ICs too.

I would pay up to 20EUR for an app with the best of al them plus some more. But maybe it's a difficult project to do.

There are some apps for kmaps, but each has it's limitations too.

It is open source.

Do you have an URL with your repo? Maybe you can talk with Dave about making it official ;)
