If you buy a 120 V FX-888 the transformer you need will look something like this:

http://www.amazon.com/Voltage-Converter-220-240-110/dp/B001ES8YY6

The one pictured is an American model, but you should find a domestic Australian model with the right kind of plug and sockets easily enough from local sellers.

It looks OK from the description. It will be made in China and built at low cost, but that will be true of all such items. It is impossible to speak about the quality without inspecting one.

You can get an FX-888 locally for $176 inc. (Mektronics, element-14, etc.). By the time you import one, then the transformer, then wait, then not have a warranty - is it worth it?

I bought several of these (well... VERY similar looking) when I came from the UK to Canada. Although Chinese (Goldsource?) made, they are quite well done IMO. My largest one is a 1500VA model and powers garden, shop tools and soldering irons/hot air gun with ease.
