Does Dave Have a Lab or a Workshop?
« on: July 18, 2014, 09:11:48 pm »
I try very hard with my English and over time I have even managed to understand various English accents but once in a while something comes along that requires a little more thought. For example, does the good Mr Jones have a lab or a workshop? It is my understanding that a lab/laboratory is used for research but a workshop is used for assembly, disassembly or repair. Then again, if we remember our university days, a lab can be used for teaching and we have certainly all learned much over the years.

So, your thoughts please, lab or workshop?
Should you find yourself in a chronically leaking boat, energy devoted to changing vessels is likely to be more productive than energy devoted to patching leaks.

What he has is a dump. See the dropcam.

And like many of us we pretentiously call our shops or dumps a lab.

Science - lab.
Mechanics - workshop.
Computers - machine room (that's an old term possible specific to the uni where I studied).
Electronics - lab.

Of course lab is latin and work is germanic so there's some snobbery there. Personally I don't go in for all that naming thing. I have an exploratorium. :)

Dave's has a lab.......in my mind because it's 2 rooms, part office, part workshop, part storage......so "lab" fits perfectly.

Mine I try to call a workshop but can't help but call it a shed, because it's an um, err...........shed!

So that makes you a boffin as they work in sheds. You're not working on jet engines by any chance?

I have one room that I call Lab, because it has only electronics lab equipment.
An other room I call workshop, because it has my lathe, drill, and other big tools
And one more room I call office, because I use it for paperwork
There are 3 kinds of people in this world, those who can count and those who can not.

I have an office (that currently has a basketball scoreboard in it!), an R&D / test / repair bench (along with 3 others for my guys) in a "electronics workshop".

The drill press, grinder, H/D bench, etc are all out in the warehouse area.  Then there's a whole mezzanine of seldom used stuff.

I tend to do almost all of my coding (PC & micro-controller) and PCB design in the office as I have 4 monitors there and I can play my own music.   :)

I have neither.
My wife insists on calling it my Geekshop...
We have two printers on the home network.
One is called GeekshopPrinter, the other is WifeysPrinter...  :)

Studio when shooting the blog (as in movie studio)
School for us and Sagan
Shop for teardowns and repairs
Lab for design work
Storage room
Office

I think that covers most of it, but I'm sure to be corrected.

That's my definition.
And I have essentially no mechanical type stuff, so it's certainly not a workshop.
But even if it did, electronics "workshops" are traditionally know as electronics labs. At least in may part of the world.
An electronics lab at university or college for example is a place where electronics experiments and builds are done. They are ever called workshop, that's where the mechanical engineering students go.
So to me it's "the lab".
I got my first lab when I was maybe 8 or so. It was the back shed, but was always known as "the lab".
And the word lab also comes from the 50-in-1 kits I and many others started out with.

To many muggles I often call it the studio, because they know I shoot video/audio for a living.

Sagan knows is as daddy's office, because it's in an office building.

Mine must be a "Lurkery" to my wife it's where I lurk, she accuses me of lurking there. :-DD But it is a workshop in my mind as I do not conduct scientific experiments or research but use it to construct and destruct various items along with some repairs and fixing. :-/O

My wife calls it my bedroom ::)
Turned a disused room into an office/lab, no bed in it, never slept in there, I tried correcting her on it, it's still my bedroom :palm:
