EE HUmor/Confessions FB Page
« on: February 24, 2015, 03:29:37 am »
I know most forum members don't do Facebook or other NSA proxies, but for those that do...

A fellow forum member (QuantumPhys) and friend recently made the "EE Confessions" Facebook page, mainly to poke fun at the engineering way of life, RF, or cesium clocks. It would be intriguing if forum members would submit their own confessions/jokes.

Not everyone uses those medium's, some of us despise them in fact.

Anyway the funny bit below.

I cant play music for peanut's, but I bought a Roland EXR-5 keyboard
just so I have more knobs to turn and buttons to press in the lab.

Claimed it on tax as a tone generator.   :-+

What kills me is that Twitter and Facebook are, essentially, the same. Both allow one to "broadcast" pictures, messages, etc. to a group of people.  (Called "followers" or "friends")   I don't see how someone could believe one is "crap" and the other is not when they are so similar.

The thing is that Facebook is in the business of collecting and selling your personal information. The data that Twitter collects is minimal by comparison.

Twitter is also in that business.  Facebook  or Twitter can only collect what the user supplies.  One can chose to use the tool without providing any information.  Facebook users may typically provide more information than twitter users, but I don't think there's a big difference in them as far as their data collecting.

Similarly, Youtube viewers are like facebook, twitter and Instagram et al users in that they are the product sold to advertisers. They aren't customers.   Youtube sells ad space, and shares it with content providers.  That ad space is, essentially, the youtube viewer's time and attention.  (well, OK they can't guarantee attention.)

There's no free lunch.

I avoid Facebook because it's full of people I can't stand. Facebook seems to be much more about social obligations to be "friends" with your irritating relatives and half-friends who tell you all about the adorable things their children did. So, nothing about it on ethical grounds from me, I just don't see the allure. I imagine I'm not the only one who just doesn't get why he'd want to use it.

On the other hand, there are some amusing people on Twitter. Some annoying ones too, but it doesn't seem so much to bring out the annoying in everyone.

The privacy implications of Facebook are enough to make me stay well away. I don't do Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, Linkedin, Google+ or any of the others.

How do you avoid "tweets" from people you can't stand?  You don't "follow" them.  Facebook has the same functionality.   You can choose not to see your relatives and friends' pictures.   How are you more obligated using one tool than the other?

I can understand prefering one tool, but among all the tools known as "social media," how can one be "pure crap" and one be worthy of use?  I just don't see that much difference.

I don't use either one much, but because my family lives far away, I do use these tools to share pictures, family news, etc.   My Sister in law can share pictures of my niece, and me, her other uncles and aunts, her grandmother, etc. can all see them.  It's a tool, and like any other, can be used well, or used poorly.

It is mostly, pure exhibitionism where couples, kids, babes, daughters, siblings, pets, houses, landscapes, cars,.... (fill with your preferred item) are always nothing less than cute, beautiful, lovely, unbelievable, unforgettable, young and similar, quite often followed by more than one exclamation mark.

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, however, there is.

I consistently find this forum to be filled with interesting people OTOH. But Facebook is mainly used by me to ask people a quick question, etc. I don't like the personal information on FB thing, which really bothers me.

I only joined this forum after seeing a few of Dave's videos expecting that it would
be community of people with a similar somewhat disturbed sense of humour.

Satirical, entertaining analogies, shit stirring without offence, and all that stuff.

Was rather disappointed when this particular thread got destroyed by others
pointing out their views on social media, I dont subscribe to these medium's
and I made that pefectly clear in my first post which by the way was the only
one that got adopted by the linked FB page, was it stolen without the authors
permission, possibly, but I dont give a rat's, as long as someone get's a laugh.

My rant is over, but this thread will survive for another day, please keep it going.

By the way, I have the rack mount version of the EX5 and can play the odd ditty, I never thought of it as a tax write off, hmm.. If nothing else, it's another reason (besides other pieces of "test equipment") to maintain a small stock of floppy disks to entertain the youngsters with.

I suppose that's my fault, and for that, I apologize.  I don't claim it's a good defense, or that it is a proper justification, but my thought was, the facebook link was posted, that was the main purpose, and it had been served.  I took the opportunity to ask a question that had been in my mind a while:  Why do people tend to think Social media site "A" is crap, while they use and encourage others to use site "B?"

Since I can't be any more offensive than I've been, I'll sumarize:  Both collect and sell your information in exchange for allowing you to broadcast messages, pictures, links, etc. to a group of people who choose to see your messages, texts, pictures, links, etc.    All of them provide means to exclude content, in a couple of ways.

I did get some replies, that did give me some insight, and for that I'm thankful.

Generally, on an internet forum, there are two schools of thought.  One is that the thread starter "owns" the thread. If it gets "hijacked," the thread starter, or OP can get rightfully offended.   The other is that threads belong to the forum and starting a thread gives one no right to determine or control what anyone posts on it.   I honestly can't tell which school is more prominent here.

Again, I apologize, and I suppose the moderators could delete these posts.  I think I can still delete mine if you wish.

At a University "Asset Audit" the guys in the Physics Department listed the Departmental BBQ as a "Particle Accelerator" for a laugh. :D
Whoah! Watch where that landed we might need it later.
