EEVBlog "Bad Gateway"
« on: July 12, 2017, 03:41:56 pm »
Hello there,

I have been getting that "Bad Gateway" error message when trying to log into EEVBlog now and then.

Any idea what causes this, and was the site down a few hours ago?

I've had similar experiences.
I think Dave knows about it (there are other thread(s) about this).
Hopefully their IT people (Gnif etc), can sort this out.
Gnif said something about a faulty (which he restarted/rebooted) something, in another thread.

An example of one of the other threads:
https://www.eevblog.com/forum/chat/return-of-502-bad-gateway-error/msg1254481/?topicseen#msg1254481

But people seem to call it different things, so there are a number of them (I think). Some are rather old.

I've been having the bad gateway error for almost a week now. :(   It mostly happens if I follow my bookmark that sends me to www.eevblog.com/forum (can get around this by adding /index.php to the end)  or if I click on the "Show new replies to your posts" link at the top of the forum.

You can also try hitting F5 if this happens.

Welcome to the strange club of bad gateway people. It's a mystery even to Dave/gnif)
I forget who I am sometimes, but then I remember that it's probably not worth remembering.

It happened a number of times yesterday. I did try all the browser tricks, but no help. Checked on other browsers and devices - same error 502, even on Internet Explorer that I have never used before to access the EEVblog forum. When the PC had error 502, so did my phone.

At one point, the forum returned but it took few minutes for the authentication to work - I guess someone restarted the forum. When the authentication started working again , so that login worked, I was getting some brief 502's for a while. I would click on a link and get the 502. Reload the page and it worked. After 15 minutes, it settled down again and mostly worked normally.

I don't know if it would help to change the  "Bad Gateway" Error 502 page to something that contained a bit more diagnostic information.

I would simply modify it so as to display "Good Gateway", how hard could it be anyway ?   :-/O ::)

Cool idea. Even better, instead of the same old pic each time, why not rotate between say 50 -75 cool pix of our fav test equipment with whatever message is needed. Be a lot nicer to look at.  8)

F5 by itself doesn't do the trick, at least not in Firefox.  You have to hit ctrl-F5 (or is it shift-F5?) to invalidate the cached copy of the page.

The effect, at least until I remember the ctrl/shift-F5 trick, is to make it appear that the forum is down for several days in a row.  Someone should look into that...

Re-installing Windoze fixes it for me, except on the occasions when I'm too quick and the server's still down. :-DD

It seems, for now, I will be doing EEVBlog in IE instead of Chrome.  I have tried all the suggestions and nothing has worked.  IE is working fine.

502 - Bad Gateway

We are sorry for the inconvenience that this error may be causing you. We are aware of the issue and are working to resolve it, please be patient.

There is no need to report this error.

Thank you for your patience,
Dave & gnif

24th March 2017: We are performing some database changes, please bear with us.

Currently I find all page loads fail with the above error page then load *VERY* slowly on a retry.

Have the database changes *REALLY* been underway for the last four months?

Perhaps it should link to a server status page or blog (possibly externally hosted) where Dave, Simon and/or Gnif could keep us informed of any known outages, scheduled maintenance etc.

Same problem here for the last week or so. Flushing the cache helps sometimes, but only temporarily. After a cache flush the page loads extremely slowly.

It has been happening on and off for me over the last week and today is particularly bad. For each page load I get the bad gateway error, I then have to flush my cache (a several step process), reload the page which is very slow and then start all over again to look at the next page!

Using an old version of the K-Meleon browser (based on the Firefox 3 rendering engine) a simple reload gets there eventually, though it may take several tries, and when it succeeds takes up to a minute to load a simple short topic like this one.   Flushing the cache doesn't appear to help.

I get it on my ipad, my android phone and also my PC on both IE and Firefox.

The only reliable? fix for me is if I turn off my internet router at the wall and leave it a few minutes and then restart it. Then all three devices start working again on Eevblog without the gateway message and the forum pages change quicker too.

I'd say that's placebo. It's completely random when you refresh and don't get the error.

Everyone is getting this message so it is not at the user side but the server side. Sometimes the forum works well and sometimes it doesn't. Gnif has to fix the server or the Cloudflare crap in between is acting up.

Unuseable up until now today. Multiple computers and browsers checked. All reported this error. Worrying if this indicates a Server is on the edge and about to fall over.

This is getting annoying; we have had several bursts or extended phases of such errors over the past couple of weeks. I am not aware of any other major web site which suffers from this level of unreliability.

"Dave & gnif", please do something about this! I assume that this site is hosted by some internet service provider, rather than by Dave himself? If so, please ask the provider to improve their act. If it is indeed self-hosted, maybe it's time to change that?

It's been happening to me today for the first time, but only in the browser I have adblock running (chrome). With IE and no adblock I have no trouble, and in chrome's private mode (no adblock) there is no problem also. Maybe it has to do with addons?

I have to say I had issues with the 502 error a few days ago, but have not had any since Dave said they were upgrading the server

No, I am pretty sure it has nothing to do with that. I normally use Firefox with an adblocker, but when the 502 error has popped up, I have also tried Edge without any add-ons right away -- same error there. And the error has also appeared on another machine with an Internet Explorer without add-ons.

I have to say I had issues with the 502 error a few days ago, but have not had any since Dave said they were upgrading the server

When did Dave (last) upgrade the server? The 502 message still talks about an update in March... And the error did show up again today (and in the weeks before) for many of us.

interesting, connecting from both home and office (high-ish ping for whatever reason) will give a lot of 502 errors, connecting using tethering from phone will give none
