What a crock. Where does the limescale go? Build up in the pipe? That's ridiculous.

Well, here is a rather lengthy web page debunking all the "quack chemistry" in a pretty thorough scientific way.

The simple test for all of these devices is "show me the corroborated scientific evidence." They cannot - it isn't there.

Bottom line is - it only works (in your head) if you think it does.

Look, I've got fairies at the bottom of my garden, but I don't BANG ON about it.

I only have this as second hand info, but permanent torroidal magnets around the polypipe on the input to water systems have been used in some mines in Australia for decades, where there is quite hard water, anecdotal reports suggest that they have saved considerable money on not having to replace components (such as taps, valves, etc)  as often due to considerable reduction of the build up of minerals on the surfaces.
