Dunno, not a RF wizard, maybe overclock the chip and boost the transmitting power to expand the range ?  :-//

Make a pretty good addon to a hospital bed if it could. Even of it could only see a surface be great for rehab, stroke and so on. I guess if it cold see inside a body that would relate to the moisture content. So may only be able to see bone the hollows of the lungs (air passages).

Yeah, just went to dentist recently and had the xray on the metal pin implant in the jaw, not sure if this can be used as alternative.

The human body is conductive, somewhat like seawater, so I would guess that radar would not penetrate inside the body and would instead just see the conductive skin. Similar to how submarines can't (?) use radar.

Even as is could detect seizures, breathing rate (as in sids), escaping patients, automatically change bed position. I wonder if it has range, could it go 30 feet? that would be awesome for home automation. Man there is a million things you could do with a mini radar.

hmm, don't think so. It looks like a tiny microwave radar with lots of data processing. Pretty high frequency judging from antenna size (>30ghz?) but the microwaves just bounce of the skin I believe, low penetration at high frequency and extremely low power from that thing one has to assume.

you can get 10 ghz radar modules from eBay for a few bucks. Just search for radar module and arduino. Haven't tested one though so can't vouch for them. I believe they are copies of a recently expired patent, used as motion sensors for burglar alarms. Locally I suspect a similar device are used at zebra crossings here in town to detect cyclists. The Google thing looks very similar but smaller with smaller patch antennas and presumably a lot of data processing for good gesture recognition.

Edit: the eBay ones (hb100) are a fixed beam so you can only detect distance and maybe speed, or you would have to sweep it physically. So you don't get an image in this case as one might expect when thinking of radar. More like a radar speed gun, but still pretty cool imho.

Of course, subs use SONAR...
There is no reason why a similar technology to this cannot be developed to take advantage of SONAR characteristics.
Oh, hang on, it has... Its called an ultrasound. Think - pregnant woman.
Miniaturization of ultrasound technology would be really cool.

With both technologies it's all about the interpretation of the image.
The technology demonstrated here has so many applications...

I guess I better get one (or 5) of those hb100's to play with.

So after a quick google of 60 GHz radars.

- No body penetration
- Can be used to detect heart and breathing rate.
- 125 meter range possible but rain, snow and so on can limit that a great deal 30% ish and requires a fairly large 23x12 cm appx rig.
- Most applications seem to fall under 3 meters. No idea on the range of the google device but probably very small (10cm?).

Interesting but not really new. Looks like a few companies are developing chips.

Unfortunately, as is the case with radar, a smaller and smaller sonars must use higher and higher frequencies to achieve any sort of beamforming capability -- and I believe the higher and higher you go in frequency, the more it just gets absorbed in the body. So there's a real tradeoff in miniaturization .
