It's pretty normal for anyone who achieves great things in life to have done some not-so-great things too. And these sort of people are normally a bit of an asshole in one way or another. It tends to come hand in hand with having the personality needed to actually get things done.
I'm not sure exactly what makes people focus on the negatives and ignore the sum of everything. I guess it just comes down to what you feel is more important in life.

Taken to an extreme fictional example, if someone created the cure for all cancers but they were also convicted of CP I think some peoples heads would explode. There would likely be a rather large % of people who would rather die than take the cure.  As if one thing has anything to do with the other.
In this example I would only view refusing the cure as a valid moral standpoint if the CP was in some way used to create the cure. eg, if there was a link between them.  But I think many people would disagree. I think in some peoples eyes doing bad things forfeits your right to be allowed to do anything good for society. Which is fucked up.

I fear such nuanced thought is lost in today's society.

Back to the technology, I was discussing the demo with one of my sons and he mentioned a remote control car I bought him when he was a kid that had a fan so it would sock to wall and he could drive all over the walls and his mom hated it. lol.

It's funny to see how much butt pain it causes in some "engineers" when a rich man with wrong political opinions hires a lot of enthusiastic young engineers to build a fancy big toy just for fun  ;D

No more than how much pain it causes some "lawyers" when a rich man with wrong political opinions hires a lot of unethical and morally flexible lawyers to represent him and litigate against people he doesnt like...

No more than how much pain it causes some "women" when a rich man with wrong political opinions hires a lot of "female lawyers" to represent and sue women who file lawsuits against him..

Edit: Okay.. thats really weird... somehow the forum sw automagically added the emoji at the beginning..  :-//

Your point being?

Back in the old days I used to use ReiserFS, and then Hans was convicted of murdering his wife, and I left one of my disks with that as the filesystem.   Because then I could say I had the only filesystem (as far as I know) designed by a convicted murderer.  It's a pretty unusual combination.

(Man, he must have really disliked her.  But he was pretty sloppy; it wasn't exactly a difficult case to crack when you put the body in your own car  :palm:.  Not that I'm condoning murder; but he clearly wasn't smart there, he should have stuck to filesystems and kernel drivers...)

Wrong political opinions? You mean to say your political opinions don't align with his? Elon has political opinion to better his money and contracts positions, which makes sense for anyone like Elon to do.

I wouldnt even classify it as a "fancy" big toy. A fancy big toy would be Dodge Tomahawk, it can be used whenever, parked in the garage, keys put in drawer, rinse & repeat. Elon toy appears to be a one time stage stunt. Elon only had to throw a rock at the truck window twice because the 1st time the rock broke the window, but after the 2nd time we havent seen more rock throwing.

Like I mentioned before, it was cool neat to see, but now what's for dinner?

So it seems there will be 3 variants.

There's only been one top speed mention and I assume its only for one with rear thrusters.
230+ MPH

Performance version
0-60 in 1.6 secs, 1,350 hp/1033 lb-ft
Includes down force systems and suction
Approximately +300 range
Reservation cost is 50k.

Thrust Version
0-60 in under 0.9 sec
Adds the rear mounted cold-gas thrusters
Reservation Cost: 250k

Rocket Version
0-60 in under 0.59 sec
Adds Full Nozzle cold-gas thruster system for airborne maneuvers
Reservation:  "Invite-Only"

I'm sure the basic edition will smoke every major car production company's halo car on the market easily.

I feel like we're going to have to add the disclaimer that the 0-60 time is achievable only once every few hours, and once you get to that kind of specmanship, it's not really a legitimate time is it?

It's certainly a very cool technology but the real 0-60 time is 1.6 seconds (definitely incredible) with some trim levels occasionally allowing that to be halved, or better, but only occasionally.

I wonder if the cold gas thrusters will be legal to operate on the road - even if just for forward momentum - or if it will be strictly off road only?  I am imagining now that we will get even more videos where Tesla drivers wipe the pants off people who have powerful ICE cars at the lights.

The model S, hell the CyberTruck regularly shows up most cars on the road. This roaderster will be stupid fast.  Better than hypercar 0-60 in the lowest trim is a lot of G's in the pants.

Humans (fragile bags of water) are the limiting factor in the design cycle obviously.
Space X adding in some vectoring thrusters would be nice but static thrusters with adjustable valves seem quite nice.

Pretty sure some neat ideas have been sparked off the tech demo.

Maybe used in the helmets of NFL players, to soften the head blows and brain rattles? Sensors can detect if two helmets are about to crash into each other and determine the impact force, then quickly fire off some thrust to soften the impact?  :-//

It's called a "reckless driving" charge. No need for new laws.

In my state of NSW:
AI Summary:
You commit this offense if you drive a motor vehicle on a road:
• Furiously (with great haste, anger, or aggression, such as high-speed tailgating or lane-weaving)
• Recklessly (with an actual awareness of and indifference to a real risk of serious harm)
• At a speed or in a manner dangerous to the public

As long as you stay under the speed limit, 0-60 in 0.8 secs, under control, seems just fine!

I think they could still get you under reckless driving for the gas release. Since it obstructs the view of other cars.

it's just air or nitrogen

I do wonder if they plan to compress the air as-is, or use some sort of a filter to pull only nitrogen out of the air.
No point filtering unless having liquid air in your tank is somehow unsafe or undesirable

I can't believe anyone actually watched the video and asked what the greenhouse impact is. :)
It completely depends on where the source of energy comes from to charge the batteries.

I'd imagine they are just compressing air. The most difficult thing they have to do is to purify it and dry it.
I regularly release my own more dangerous exhaust which I'm sure has an impact to some greenhouse somewhere.    :-DD

And the greenhouse footprint to make that compressed air or nitrogen? Maybe solar, or maybe all the engineers pedal connected bikes attached to a compressor?

Anyways...... cool & neat, now I need to check my dinner that's in the oven. ;)

Until the exhaust totals the car behind you at the lights.
