Keysight Giving scopes to youtubers?
« on: May 19, 2016, 12:50:20 am »
Has anyone noticed a large number of MSO-X scopes being used by youtubers who would in no way be able to afford the $11K scopes they were given. I mean sure people will take sponsorship but I think they should be more up front about it, I've seen hardly anyone mention it. I know Keysight / Agilent aren't the only ones as Tek has done this as well.

Just a couple examples.

What do y'all think do content creators need to be more up front about this?

I know some people do disclose it but a lot of people don't and I honestly think every video should have some sort of disclaimer, because I think a lot of people aren't aware that the people didn't buy the gear.

I'm pretty sure Tektronix has been giving scopes to popular YouTubers as well.

I don't have a problem with that if they are just being used as test equipment.  I don't even think a disclosure is required in that case.  But if the YouTuber is doing a review on the unit they should disclose the fact that it was given to them, so the viewer can be aware and judge if that has had an influence on the review.

I think it's a bit unrealistic to ask a blogger to put a disclaimer on every video in the future where they might use the scope.

Yeah, tek went nuts giving anyone of interest mdo3k.

Plenty of product placement around.

mjlorton - has more power supplies, multimeters than bench space.
signalpath - rigol everywhere, not sure if donated or bought.
dave - lots of old stuff, so gets a pass. gives back his test units or are ebay purchase (impartial).

There are also quite a few Gossen Metrawatt DMMs floating around on several yt channels, was there a giveaway by Gossen? Please, Gossen, send one to Big Clive, I always cringe watching him poking around on mains with one of his cheapie Poundland hand grenades  :-DD

Some I buy myself, some I give back as they are loaners, some are on permanent loan as demos.
I don't want to sound conceited or anything like that, but a company giving me a new scope, no matter what the price, it's kinda yawn worthy, I've got so many scopes I don't know what to do with them all. I don't feel the least bit like I'm being paid at all (and I'm technically not, because it doesn't put food on the table). If anything when a new scope scope turns up out of the blue, it's just extra pressure to actually get around to doing something with it. Most gear sits there gathering dust. I treat all gear as being on permanent loan, and they can ask for it back at any time.
There are very few instances where a company has said "we'll let you keep it". They simply send it to me and it's usually unclear whether they want it back or not.
It's actually important for reviewers to keep gear like this because then they can be used in comparisons and demos etc. I've done many such videos that would not be possible without having all different brands.
And I'll often include comparison with other brands in my reviews, and the company sending me the gear can't be happy wiht that because it looks awkward for them to publicise the review etc if it shows their competitors. But that is official review policy stated on my website, they either take it or leave it.

The giveaways don't ever seem to reach the UK. I don't know any UK YouTubers with gear sent to them from Keysight or Tek etc.
