Greetings EEVBees:

--I am repairing an Acer Aspire 5253-BZ656 Laptop with multiple problems. Some of the metal inserts have broken the plastic surround due to too much torque during assembly, and have been reinforced using super glue and JB Weld. Also the cooling fan connector was buggered and left unconnected, so the Laptop shuts down after two hours. No problem, except I could not find a source for the little 3 pin connector that comes with the fan, and I really did not want to solder to the MB. Does anyone happen to know where I could find small connectors of this sort, so I can order some, to keep on hand. In the meanwhile I ordered a brand new fan for $10 US. See picture below for example.

--I live in the US. Any suggestions for sources for this sort of thing would be appreciated.

  • Question Everything... Except This Statement
while i cannot reccomend the actual part number, if you want one quickly, go to a rough and cheap computer repair store, those connectors are very common old video cards, and most of the cheaper computer stores will still have a few floating around they would be willing to part with for a few $,

i had to do a similar thing for a robot in my youth that had a 2 pin varient of it that broke,

I would love to help - but I'd need some basic measurements ( pitch etc) and more photos. (both sides and end, also photo of socket)

Dear NotSOB:

--I very much appreciate your offer of help. I am not looking for any specific end connector for a laptop fan. I have already purchased a new fan and connector, in this case. I am looking for a U.S. source for small connectors of this generic type with "any size" and "any number" of pins, so that I can build up a stock for the future. Thanks again.

That looks like the fairly common JST PH.

Once you figure out the manufacturer and part number (it's probably indeed a standard part from the likes of JST and Molex), you should be order it from any of the big electronic parts distributors like Digikey, Mouser or Newark. You may have to order the connector housing, pins and crimp tool separately.

Is it wrong that I got excited looking through the JST product catalog?
