Master choice: How much are they worth?
« on: September 02, 2026, 06:47:09 pm »
Good evening all,

This thread is basically a follow up to this: https://www.eevblog.com/forum/chat/career-advice-476021/
TLDR: I'm not liking my job, not really feel satisfied with what I find available in the job market right now, and honestly I want to do... more.

for the past months I have been thinking about getting back to university and finally get a master degree.
The reasons are pretty simple:
  • It still kinda feel like a defeat to not have a proper bachelor
  • I want more than what I could reasonably expect from my study title/job experience with the current job market
  • I would like to work abroad, at least for a while, and so far this seems impossible (you guessed it!) with the current job market
and in general, AI is making it harder and less rewarding to work as a SWE, which is what is mostly possible to work as here in northern Italy with my degree, assuming I find a somewhat accessible/ well enough paying job opening (as in, pays me enough not not get poorer while working, which in Milan is not a given at all)

As such, I would like to get back in to university to get a master. Lucky me I am very good with savings, so money should not be an issue.

Having an intrest in electronics/microcontrollers and finding it more rewarding than working on a more abstract stuff (ie computer programming) I was thinking about doing the EIT embedded systems master, linked below.
https://masterschool.eitdigital.eu/intelligent-chips-and-systems

This is part of EU's effort to catch up with semiconductors (with debatable success, but that is beside the point).

The idea would be for the first year to study in Italy at PoliMi, in which i got my bachelor, and which is close to home, and then move abroad pheraps in Finland, mainly as a way to already be inserted in the nordics job market and it's high tech companies.
(courseware available here) https://masterschool.eitdigital.eu/intelligent-chips-and-systems/entry-exit
The specialization would be "Embedded Systems Architecture and Software" at Tampere University, which... I don't know. I'm still not completely sold to (courses of the program attached below).

So... as someone that did not feel adequately formed by it's university, how would you (as in someone that is inside the industry) rate this course and this universities?
I'm tring to understand what a possible employer would think highly of accademically speaking, and what are my options here because I may not get accepted and I would like to have a plan B or C, because lets be real my grades were not that good (weighted average of 20.75/30), and I'm not sure how much my work experience (as a Service Engineer working on BESS systems) is worth in the eyes of the admission office.

I'm currently thinking mainly about this program, but as a EU citizen I can access more universities in Europe, ideally in center/northern Europe (I dont have high hopes for Italy's future  :-[), so I'm still trying to decide what to do.

To Europeans that have finished university and have been working for a while, do you have any reccomandations regarding all of this? I dont know what I do not know, but I'd like to hear from people that were in my shoes and have somehow figured out a way in this difficult period.

Cheers!
