A rhetorical question I know, but so marketing types can justify their payroll.  Someone is probably already hard at work designing their next rebranding.  If they didn't waste time on stupid shit like this, the marketing department could be cut in half and management would start to think it was less important than product development or customer support.

Who cares about this.. all they did is redesign their logo to freshen it up.

Usually logos mutate more subtly. Arsing around like this is usually a sign that a company is in difficulties and trying to relaunch itself.

-Sigh-....

http://www.atmel.com/

Quote from: Someone on AVR Freaks, presumably from Atmel
It carries forward a bit of our previous identity but with a fresher, more forward looking feel. We’re just starting to rollout it. You’ll start seeing it more broadly in the coming weeks and months. Let us know what you think.
Wankwords, although I can understand Atmel wanting to distance themselves from past performance.

Has Atmel done more than change a font?

<sarcasm mode ON>

For sure they've juggled the budget allocations within marketing dept while also bullied the finance dept for major inter dept budget shifts in order to squeeze the money for this new logo, how is that sound ?   ;D

I'd say that is quite some job they've done there especially with whole company's performance and track record lately.  ::)

That slogan was probably a leftover from some failed antiperspirant advertising.

As if Atmel gives a fart about what their customers think. Not about their products, not when their website relaunch rendered the site unusable and surely not about a pointless logo.

I like the new logo better! As to whether the change was worth it, dunno, I guess that's another story.

They're right that it looks 'fresher' - it's the sort of logo you expect on milk or yogurt cartons. Maybe they should diversify...

There's more important things to get worked up over

But that's what engineers do on forums, get worked up over trivial stuff!

Point is that atmel is in a bit of a pickle.. Three years ago they were even trying to sell themselves to microchip... Imagine that!
Theyre not so well. So it is logical thet a logo change is seen with a bit of a weary eye by some people.

The rebranding might seem trivial and pointless to worry about, but I have worked in companies before where a change of logo (to something that rendered awful in monchrome) cost about $200mil.

I've never been fond of trivial stuff like this ever since.

I seem to recall that it was Microchip who was trying to do the buying?

The buyout offer by Microchip was unsolicited.  They offered $5 a share.  The offer was rejected by Atmel.

With hindsight, and based on the share price, a good move. They jumped up to a high of $15, and are now just $7.

Those of us in Oz will remember when the Channel 10 Network decided their logo should be the Roman
numeral for ten,X,so it would be distinctive.
It turned out that there were very few Ancient Romans in the viewing audience,so it didn't last long. ;D

Probably the audience was in dissapointment cause they're expecting more X characters rather than single X ?  ;D  ..... j/k

Hmm... Atmel's logo has changed. Because of this, I will now use Atmel products. This logo has really influenced my decision. More important than availability, price, support and features.

A while ago Mastercard got a new logo: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1ztXKx1vzuQ/Tr1563f2ZxI/AAAAAAAArSs/_h_WtzTEiJc/s1600/mastercard_logo27.JPG

Rubbish... the old one was simpler and easily recognised... why change it...

I agree, that font looks more like something you'd find on a consumer product.

The old logo was more serious and industrial-looking.

Maybe you nailed it. This is for the Arduino artists, who felt threatened by the old industrial looking logo. Now it is soft, and in baby colors to no longer make them nervous.
