It's primarily a fast, wide-field survey telescope.
Will it solve the dark-matter / dark-energy puzzle? Probably not, or not on its own, but I suspect we will be living with that problem for a few more decades. Personally (and I'm not a physicist), I have growing doubts that the whole "dark"-this-and-that notion will pan out. It's still quite possible that we aren't measuring or understanding non-"dark" physics at galactic or universe-wide scales well enough.
Anyway, the fact that we invest in these sorts of instruments gives me hope for humanity. I'm happy it launched safely and very much hope it has a long life and makes many contributions to science.
