Philips discreet components.
« on: November 11, 2018, 12:41:33 pm »
Hi :)
I wonder if anyone knows how long it has been since Philips did discreet components?
I think they still do industrial capacitors, but I’m thinking more along the lines of components inside domestic products.

Specifically “Chicklet” capacitors.

Philips sold BC Components in 1999 and it became part of Vishay in 2002

I am pretty sure that Philips has no in-house electronic component manufacturing anymore.

This thread piqued my curiosity about Philips and started browsing a little about this gem among the world's electronic companies.

From what I can gather from online resources, (and please, any Dutch posters correct any of my following statements) Philips has abandoned the electronics and illumination business altogether. What remains of Philips is now for all practical purposes, a healthcare company.
The divested divisions who sell under the Philips brands do so under license.

These from a company that gave the world, the compact cassete, CD & DVD (jointly with Sony), the I2C standard, the pentode tube, and many dozens of innovations that escape my memory.

Philips has been through a massive selling spree on all its traditional businesses, and a massive buying spree on health care.

I think that would be "discrete".

They seem to be pretty discreet about it.  ;D

You got me. I can’t blame the keyboard for that one,
but incidentally, the time has come to let one of my babies go.

Designed for Windows XP, and typing has gone to hell. A key press is dropped, and auto correct tries to guess the word.

But again, can’t blame the KB for that one.

Sounds like GE, a company that has collapsed into itself like a neutron star.

That's interesting. You really think GE has collapsed?

Indeed, Philips was either the Dutch GE or the Dutch RCA.

More like the latter, I believe, as Philips never got into heavy electrical power generation and distribution equipment. In that respect, Siemens was more GE-like.

And yes, GE is at this moment in a lot of trouble. Google "GE troubles" and there are dozens and dozens of articles discussing GE's spiraling down.

GE is a shell of its once-formidable industrial and financial might.

Yep they are in trouble in some of their business units, but I'm wondering about their long term viability and whether it's as bad as everyone says it is.

Whatever the end result, I'm still furious about the sale of Alstom to GE, backed by our political leaders. We knew it was betrayal, but on top of that, this is already smelling bad for this unit as well, after just a couple years.

Please correct me if I am wrong, but had GE not acquired Alstom, then Siemens would have acquired it?

I know that Alstom is one of France's crown jewels. Back in the 60s, they built Mexico City's Metro (subway), modeled of course after the Paris Metro newer lines. The cars had a plaque:  Les Ateleliers du Nord de France.

At the time, it was perhaps the world's most advanced subway technology.

Then how do you feel about Alstom-Siemens?
I don't have a horse in that race. But I do admire Alstom's portfolio and achievements.

Probably not the same Alstom unit, at least I don't think so for a number of reasons.

Pretty bad as well. But this is "only" the railway business part. This is infuriating as well, but a lot less strategic IMO than what was sold to GE...
