problem sourcing capacitors please help
« on: February 18, 2017, 09:03:36 pm »
Evening eevblog forum members, I'm just repairing an amp from the eightes and two power caps have blown. Now the problem i am having is sourcing two replacements the correct size to fit side by side on the board. They are hard up against each other. The ones that have blown are nichicon 8200uf 56V 85deg and they are 25mm dia by 63mm length pin spacing 10mm I have found these 381LX822M063J052 at Digikey but they want a minimum order of 1000. I only want two. Now there are others out there snap in pins at 63v and 80v but they are typically 35mm dia so they off course cannot sit in the board side by side. I'm in the uk and the usual suppliers don't have them. Any ideas please guys where i could get these, anyone have any willing to sell? I guess i could locate the 35mm ones elsewhere in the case on abit of veroboard and wire them in but this is not ideal of course. regards, Andy

I'm not turning anything up either. To bad you do not have enough room to parallel up capacitors.

What is actual voltage on them? If there is enough headroom, you could use 50V caps. Would 30mm capacitors fit? They seem to be pretty common.

If you can live with  8200uF @50V  , here you go:

LLS1H822MELA  8200uF @50V   http://www.digikey.com/products/en?keywords=LLS1H822MELA
or
380LX822M050J452 http://www.digikey.com/products/en?keywords=380LX822M050J452

If three 100  Ohm resistors are connected in parallel, and in series with a 200 Ohm resistor, how many resistors do you have?

8200 uF is a bit of an oddball value. Try scanning the market for 10000 uF instead, there should be a much bigger selection available.

Not that oddball actually, there are plenty of them. Going up in capacitance does not help in this case.

In my opinion it does. In theory, a 10000 uF would be physically larger than 8200 uF. However, a lot has happened in capacitor technology since the 80s, and electrolytics today are usually smaller than they were then.
Looking for 10000 uF gives access to a vast offering.

So go look for a 10000uF @ 50V  with 25mm diameter and we'll all be friends ....

So go look for a...

I wouldn't dream of doing so. It's not my amp.

Then take a look at farnell, digikey or whatever and see yourself. Hint: there are plenty of 8200uf x63V caps (although 30+ mm) and no 10000uf x63V with 25mm diameter either.
