safe tape for through hole parts?
« on: August 14, 2022, 02:13:35 am »
What is a safe tape to use (esd wise, like the paper stuff they put on strips)?

I want to sort some diodes and stuff. I put them in ESD bags and then into a binder, but I want to bind them together like on a tape.

Preferably something with low residue.

Kapton tape is pretty safe to use.
Also doesn't leave residue and is common in the electronics field

(Also called polyimide tape, kapton is a brand)
Greek letter 'Psi' (not Pounds per Square Inch)

Hmm I Guess that would work. Can't be torn easily though, which is not convenient for shortening a strip of resistors.

The component strips I have seen appear to be made with a paper-backed masking tape over a thin cardboard backing.  Adhesive residue is often left on the component leads.  Paper backing allows the tape to be torn easily.  Why can't you use the same?  3M and others make a variety of paper-backed tapes.  Some of the adhesives used may leave more residue than others.

but are these tapes ESD safe? I thought semi conductor manufacturers might use special glue and stuff for things like diodes. The paper tape must be approved for like official use since thats how they sell parts.

I have a diode sorting problem really

For instance using scotch tape in this application seems like a really bad idea. Does the glue not form a thin sheet of plastic with triboelectric effect on the surface of masking tape?

Most diodes aren’t particularly ESD-sensitive.

But honestly, I’d just buy convenient size zipper baggies and store them in those, within the bigger bags. Get antistatic or static dissipation bags if you feel like it, but it’s not critical for diodes.

I did not think it would be called masking tape but its called masking tape
https://www.eis-inc.com/product/masking-tape-ph22-8126

and you can get ESD safe paper for the other side
https://www.hisco.com/Catalog/Static-Control/ESD-Safe-Binders-Tags-Document-Holders/ESD-Safe-Paper-and-Pads

so it looks like you can lay the parts out over paper strips, put a seperator comb on top, and tape it down on both sides

Not too bad since the part length is usually 50-60mm, and you can make 10 strips quickly
