No pictures, but from my attic office window I'll see pine tops, a piece of neighbor's roof and an occasional squirrel or two. From my basement lab window, I see small batch of sky and occasionally the mailman's feet.

Well, this was from the window last week. got another mystery potted plant today, cost on clearance was $2, so I bought 2, one for me and one for the neighbour. The bird is in the bush outside, and the local ringneck lorikeet population are around pretty much every day in the trees eating the nuts and flowers. Then you have the vervet monkleys, the local geese, the ibis and the blue crane from the park up the road, along with those *&&$^& peacocks.

I once went to deliver some pinball machines to a guy who was rather well off (one of the co-founders of Pace Electronics). He had a fabulous collection of cars parked in his drive, all covered in horrible scratches. Turned out he had a garden full of peacocks that walked all over them, horrible sharp talons raking the paint off.

At the top of sweeping stairs in his entrance hall he had a huge painting of him sitting on the wing of a pink Spitfire. I think his wife commissioned that without him knowing! Turns out he did indeed own the spitfire along with an airfield full of assorted planes and the gyrocopter used in one of the Bond films.

Those however are literal royal game, seeing as they roost in the JZ complex area. I stop for them in the road so they can cross.

Seriously though,  I have conisdered security bars on my basement lab's window - mostly for the times we are out of town for several days.  I live in a rural area but occasionally neighbors have had someone break into their place when they're away.

What are others doing for lab security?  Alarms?

Nope, not a Dangerous Neighborhood, a dangerous country.
I live down in Margate South Coast of South Africa (about 120km from SeanB), which is considered the retirement city of SA.
And it is the same here. In the past year we have had 7 break in's in our complex (34 Houses) surrounded with High Electric Fences.
The 'shoppers' just hop over the fences like they are nothing.

In South Africa, the Criminals are free, and we are the ones behind bars ;-)

And this happened a few days, about 5km away from where I live :

Ten people were arrested this morning after they were found with heroin to the street value of more than seven million rand‚ police say.

The joint operation by Durban Hawks and National Intervention Unit members made the bust at a house in Ramsgate‚ near Margate.

The arrested suspects aged between 22 and 29 will appear in the Ramsgate Magistrate’s Court later today on a charge of dealing in drugs.

“After months of intense investigation by the Hawks‚ they uncovered a drug syndicate operating in a plush Ramsgate suburb in Margate. During the investigation it was discovered that it was a Durban based syndicate which had moved to South Coast. Investigations were completed and an intelligence driven operation was conducted‚” the SAPS said in a statement.

At about 8am this morning‚ the Hawks assisted by the National Intervention Unit armed with the search warrant raided the house and recovered about 120 000 readily packed straws of heroin and eight kilograms of unpacked heroin.

“The house was found to be a processing and packaging clandestine laboratory.”
