The New Cosmos
« on: March 11, 2014, 06:55:03 am »
One of the earliest books I can remember reading was Cosmos by Carl Sagan. I read it when I was 8 years old, and though much of it was beyond my understanding at the time, it helped form my understanding and perception of the world. As I entered my early teens I re-read it, and read other books by Sagan, and by Hawking and Feynman. I watched the original Cosmos on VHS. He taught me to seek to explore and understand the universe.

Though the winds of fate and chance blew me off the path to becoming a scientist, my beliefs, values, aspirations, and dreams were powerfully shaped by Carl Sagan as I grew up. Without his books and those VHS tapes, I would be a different person than I am today.

When I heard that Seth McFarlane was remaking Cosmos, I was scared shitless. While I enjoy his comedy, the idea of the creator of Family Guy remaking one of the most important and serious television programs in history, and one that's very important to me, was deeply worrying. Even the inclusion of Neil deGrasse Tyson, who I'm a fan of, wasn't enough to convince me.

I just finished watching the first episode.

They got it right.

If you haven't seen it yet, please watch it as soon as physically possible.
