USB-to-Mini-USB - need a version with extra compact connectors
« on: January 27, 2020, 07:23:44 am »
Hi all,

I'm looking for a USB to mini USB adapter cable, similar to attached picture. The length should be rather short (~10 cm):

The challenge I'm having is that I need very short connectors on the regular USB connector, rather than the typical rather long connectors. Have you seen such variants anywhere?

Thank you,
Martin

The thing from the link you show shouldn’t exist and I’d say it’s a good thing you can’t find it as its not USB compliant and violates the standard in more than one way. It seems to be meant to connect two USB devices (i.e. not hosts) together which doesn’t make sense. There’s a regular Mini-A Mini-B plug on one end. That is an upstream port which is meant solely for USB devices for connecting them to the host. It doesn’t look like a Mini-A plug that’s meant to go into Mini-AB socket that supports USB On-The-Go which could be found on devices that could assume the role of either a USB device or host. And there you have a USB-A-socket-on-a-cable which also isn’t permitted by the standard but, more importantly, doesn’t make much sense, either, as it is a downstream port (meant to be installed in a USB host).

TL;DR: If you have a device that actually requires that nonsense, toss it in the bin as it’s clearly been made by someone with no clue or any regard to standards whatsoever. If you’re thinking of designing some solution of your own using this, you should take a step back and do some reading on the USB ecosystem and its (admittedly a bit convoluted) basics.
