You know your an electronics geek when...
« on: March 09, 2016, 01:55:08 pm »
I was watching The Last Witch Hunter the other day and there was this scene where a whole bunch of witches were working together in a chain to cast a powerful spell. The hero was able to interrupt the spell by killing just one of the witches in the "chain", and I thought "Should have gone with the star configuration instead of delta".  While not a perfect analogy, was still a pretty geeky thing to think ;D

I would have thought they would use AetherNet.

Now, if it was Tolkien Ring...

Those Tolkien Ring networks work great until they get too close to Mordor.

In days of yore when we were young,it was not the case.

Why,in a quiz show I watched recently, the contestant didn't know yaw was one of the principal axes of an aircraft in flight.
It would have shocked the Principal of the local Aeronautics College, to find that people out there in the public  didn't know their first principles.
"They're all fools out there!",he would have spluttered. ;D

How did this go from witch hunter to grammer nazi's....besides the point.

I hate it when i get gremlins in my project, and if i feed them after midnight, it only gets worse.
Buy it, use it, break it, fix it, Trash it, change it, mail upgrade it, Charge it, point it, zoom it, press it, Snap it, work it, quick - erase it,

Yep.  I would have hoped that engineers would show a little more attention to detail though...

From what I've seen, the average engineer has average spelling.

I think most people tend to put similar amounts of care into the things they do, so poor [occupationers] tend to do their jobs, and speak, and write, poorly, and exceptional ones tend to do well.

Just for pedantry's sake, if you're curious --

I'm not sure what extent do (native) English speakers care about their grammar to, but I forgot most of the formal English I've learned in middle school and high school.
Actually in China formal British English is mandatory for most students, but most of us, including me, forgot most of the stringent rules after graduated from high school.

Oooh, I don't think I've seen "to" displaced that far in a sentence.  There's a joke about that sort of syntax:

Quote
Supposedly an editor had clumsily rearranged one of Churchill’s sentences to avoid ending it in a preposition, and the Prime Minister, very proud of his style, scribbled this note in reply: “This is the sort of English up with which I will not put.”

("Which I will not put up with" being the common phrasing.) :D

Your english is a lot better than my Mandarin, I might have to take lessons from the Hans upstairs, if I ever do see them. They work long hours, leave early, arrive late.

There is nothing pedantic or grammar nazi about picking up on using "your" instead of "you're".  It's not even grammar, it's THE WRONG BLOODY WORD!

My favorite "you know you are an EE nerd when..." story is about Jim Williams:

"...Everyone knew Jim loved his circuits, but Siu is Jim's true love. ...... After his first date with Siu he called up and told me that he didn't think about circuits all night. ... That was a big deal for Jim...."

"...to a grammar Nazi's what?", as my old English teacher, John "Rusty" Reynolds would have said before giving one a 1000 lines for misspelling 'grammar' while studying at a grammar school.

You could do almost anything in one of John's lessons without earning a more serious punishment than a raised eyebrow or a weary, sad telling off except misspell 'grammar'. Minimum fine 1000 lines and it was a mistake you didn't make twice.
Anybody got a syringe I can use to squeeze the magic smoke back into this?

You know you're an electronics geek when the first thing that comes to mind when an electronic device dies is, "grrr, electrolytic caps".
