Stupid AI Hand Tool Videos

I'm seeing more and more stupid AI generated "hand tool" videos that claim to show a new hand tool. But if you examine what's going on it's not possible for the tool to be cutting out what is shown. So much garbage is going to be created with AI what is real and what is fake will be harder and harder to detect.

I didn't watch the links you provided, as I stopped watching youtube about a week ago. It's full of AI crap and useless content. The videos suggested to me are waste of my time.

Unfortunately, you see them because you click on them. It never showed up in my recommendation list (and I watched them in incognito)
They are really stupid. Good thing youtube is demonetizing these channels. I think they rely now on Amazon affiliate links or something.

Youtube was always 99.99% human-generated crap, now it's 99% AI-generated crap, 0.99% human-generated crap. The recommendation algorithms was always pretty good, it still is, so don't do the mistake of clicking crap videos and avoid OP's links (use incognito mode if you want to research this crap), and you mostly never see it.

Of course. I didn't say I didn't want to see any of them, because I want to witness and know the stupidity of what's going on. I want to know what this idiocy is now and what it is evolving into, for my own education and curiosity. But there's nothing I can do about it other than that.

Anyone who has ever dabbled in hand-woodworking will have no trouble seeing the problems here. Only an utter layman without the least bit of technical insight could be fooled by those videos. Especially that Wera plane/router/whatever had me rolling over the floor laughing. Obviously whoever made that bit of AI-comedy never used a profile plane. Hint: you need both hands and throw in a fair bit of body weight to plane such profiles by hand.

For years YouTube has been recommending utterly idiotic videos, also in the field of electronics. All those video's of satellite reception with a paperclip, a penlite battery in the chuck of a cordless drill, and all those other click-bait videos. If the title says 'fantastic invention!' but is vague otherwise, without mentioning what it's for, it'c clickbait that can safely be ignored.

It's always been like that: people vying for one's time and attention. Be careful who & what you spend your time on. You can spend a minute watching this AI garbage, or you could spend a minute watching a Paul Sellers video and actually learn something. It's all a matter of choice.

Idiocy has been of all times. Visit for example the cesspit that is the 'dodgy technology' subforum. It's an utter waste of one's time that can be better used otherwise. Same with watching those AI-videos.

It sucks. And while I have been actively giving thumbs down to every AI slop video once I have determined that it is AI slop, they have now taken that ability away from us. The one and only hope we had of manipulating the algorithm to show less of the slop.

I saw that some videos have an AI flag, and that there is a wish from users to add an option to exclude all AI generated videos from results and recommendations. However I am not so sure they will add it. If the AI slop channels realise that flagging videos as AI only limits their audience, they will probably stop flagging them as it only hurts their own exposure. Which makes me wonder who that AI flagging is for. The users? Or for those training AI models from videos, to exclude AI slop, so that AIs models don't regurgitate AI slop in their training data?

There's now an "AI" tag on YT videos containing a significant amount of AI-generated stuff, but I have no clue how it works. Is it automated, is it only declarative (the channel owner tagging their own videos), and if automated, how does YT detect it? What's the algorithm? It's pretty obvious that it only tags a very small fraction of AI-generated videos.

Oh, and if you watch shorts (which you probably shouldn't), I don't think there's any kind of tagging. No description either, no comments, nothing. Don't watch these.

I didn't watch them either. The best thing to do is not click on them. The YT algorithm is aggressive enough without the community helping me watch more. There are plenty of non AI content  videos to watch but you just have to be vigilant. AI is a powerful adversary and from YT POV it works. End of story.

Youtube's recommendation algorithm is merciless. Be very careful what you click. One accidental slip and you will be getting unwanted recommendations possibly for months. The algorithm must be designed by sadists.

I noticed you linked to youtube Shorts. Honestly, I've found that the vast majority of Shorts are just low-effort, clickbait, or outright crap, regardless of whether they're AI-generated or made by real people. At one point I even tried to find a single Short that was genuinely interesting or informative, but after watching around a hundred of them I couldn't find even one that was worth my time. In the end I just blocked the entire Shorts section on youtube with ublock origin.

AI-generated fake videos are definitely making that problem even worse, but in my experience Shorts were already full of low-quality content long before generative AI became popular.

I don't really agree. I watch plenty of youtube channels where people discuss technical topics, engineering, psychology, and other subjects, and I haven't noticed AI-generated content being a significant problem there. Most of what I watch is made by real people and is genuinely informative.

As for AI itself, I've actually come across quite a lot of AI-generated music on youtube that I genuinely enjoy.

In my opinion, the biggest problem with youtube isn't AI - it's advertising, especially if you're using the official app or Chrome without uBlock Origin.

With ads enabled, youtube has become absolutely unusable. Videos are constantly interrupted, and you're repeatedly presented with content you're not interested in. On the mobile app it's particularly bad, to the point where watching anything becomes frustrating. In Chrome, ads don't take over as much screen space, but they still appear frequently enough to seriously disrupt the viewing experience.

On the other hand, using firefox with ublock origin provides a completely different experience. Without constant ad interruptions, youtube becomes much more enjoyable and practical to use.

Also, if you're signed in to youtube, don't forget to use "Don't recommend channel" and "Not interested" whenever you come across content you don't want to see. Over time, this improves the quality of your recommendations and helps filter out a lot of crap videos.
