best brands of canned chili
« on: July 26, 2025, 07:13:50 pm »
We live in a unique world where its almost economical to buy cans online, and canned chili is good enough to bother at least partially stocking.

What are the best brands of chili ?

Or freeze dried, if it exists.

Dennison's Chili, although it is only distributed in the western US.

Carolina Reaper chili - if you can get it canned. I got a small bottle with it, and I recommend it..  :-+

I probly eat more canned chili than I should. I find the following brands to be good:
  • Hormel
  • Nalley
  • Campbell's
I've bought Southgate, el cheapo stuff (both beef & chicken), at the dollar store. It's tolerable, but not as good as the above.

My normal procedure is to grate a bunch of sharp cheddar cheese over the chili.
And the ultimate: serve w/cornbread.

Hormel tastes like bitter to me, I ate too much of it. It is no longer appetizing

That might be true of any (canned) chili, eaten enough repeatedly.
The only chili I never got tired of was what they served at the (now gone) Bagdad Cafe in San Francisco.
With cornbread, of course.

FWIW  I've made a lot of chili from the various kits in the grocery stores and some of them included masa flour but I couldn't say that it tasted any different than the kits without masa.

Most of the canned chili is much too greasy for my taste. I brown my ground beef and then drain the grease and oil off and then add the other ingredients and make my own chili.

We usually make a box of macaroni and cheese, with a two slices extra of Velveeta cheese, combine it with a can of chili, and add a couple of cut up hot dogs.  I am not fond enough of chili to eat it by itself.

Both of my kids love Mac and Cheese mixed with Chile but I'm not that big of a fan of Mac and Cheese.

make a large batch, its just the same amount of work and freeze  it in individual portions

But have you tried proper macaroni cheese, not the powdered box travesty. Make a proper cheese sauce with real ,not  skool bus coloured plastic, cheese poured over cooked macaroni and then grilled to brown the top.

Well, maybe that is why we add the Velveeta to the cheese mix.  When I make it, I use a whisk attached to my drill to mix the cheese; I try to use power tools for everything I cook.

you can get undyed american cheese. It's white.

that cheese is cultural identity, people need to lay off. There is plenty of weird processed foods from other cultures that are not particularly healthy either , but some how they are acceptable.  :-//

Though, it says the velveta cheese was substantially different, made out of other cheeses, long ago, and it got changed by 90s walstreet winner takes all mentality.

This recipe seems to adhere to the historical record of original velveeta: (colby, swiss and cheddar, as per the advertisement)
https://gregkantner.com/blog/archives/6292

It hardly seems diabolical

    1 cup of boiling water
    6 Tablespoons of milk powder
    1/3 lb cheddar cheese, grated
    1/3 lb colby cheese, grated
    1/3 lb swiss cheese, grated
1.5 tsp gelatin (like Knox® Unflavored Gelatin)
