So, regenerative braking in a hybrid vehicle then? Or what?

Yes regenerative braking using a retrofitted VGT motor/generator.

We could use the VGT to generate power when braking and store it in a relatively small storage battery. Then when we need extra power to accelerate the VGT becomes a motor adding extra boost to the engine. For large commercial diesel trucks a retrofit is basically the only option. I often hear semi's using a Jake brake over a mile away and thought surely we can do better than this.

It's about efficiency, why convert all the energy when braking into heat or noise?. It makes no sense to me.
