Duracell Optimum faster BULLSHIT
« on: August 11, 2021, 03:07:22 am »
Just saw an advert yesterday about these new Duracell batteries with the usual wild claims that it lasts longer and so on but I they showed a screw driver and they said it will make it work "faster".

Now how does it achieve that? extra cell voltage?

I find the same advert but not in English on Youtube but there is this one with a toothbrush that they said they same thing that will work faster but not how:

upgrade your devices with duracell optimum

Our battery will make your appliance work faster... but what if I don't want it to work faster and over voltage of that is the case?

I remember Dave Jones did a video on some batteries he was testing and  I think they were Rayovac. He measured them at 1.6v but nothing about that on the packet or their chemistry and he mentioned that when you add more cells that 1v will start to make a difference and can over voltage if the regulators can't handle it of if there is none to protect the circuit.

Quite offended when the whole page shakes and prevents the right click context menu:

We are proud to introduce New Duracell Optimum, our most groundbreaking innovation yet. Duracell Optimum 1.5-Volt AA and AAA batteries use a unique formula :bullshit: that helps to improve the performance of your devices. It lasts longer¹ in some devices like your Xbox One Wireless Controller, while it will make other devices, like your RC toy car² go faster¹ for better playtime, or your battery operated screwdriver ³ rotate quicker¹ to build your furniture in record time.

Get more out of your devices with Duracell Optimum.

1 Extra battery life vs. minimum average duration in 2015 IEC tests (www.iec.ch) or extra battery power in a range of devices vs. next best alkaline AA/AAA. www.duracell.info
2 Tested in Spinmaster Grave Digger 1:24, 24ghz
3 Tested in Black+Decker BCF601

I found the answer my question and it is 1.5v:

So how does it spin faster?

New proprietary technology :bullshit: provides more energy to your most demanding device.

They talk about "unique formula" and "New proprietary technology" but I don't see much on the data sheet other than a few graphs to show it

I found the datasheets.

About 0.4 more watt hours at 1000ma than the Coppertop and Industrial so it does hold a bit more energy compared to the Industrial

The Industrial and the coppertop seems to perform better at lower watthours.

I initially misread the graph at first but the Coppertop and Industrial seems to perform better at lower watt hours:
Quote
Optimum AA
200ma 3.0 Watt hours
500ma 2.25 Watt hours

1000ma 1.4 Watt hours

Coppertop AA
200ma 10.5 Watt hours
500ma 2.9 Watt hours

1000ma 1 Watt hours

Industrial AA
500ma 3.2 Watt hours
1000ma 1 Watt hours

Industrial/Coppertop/Quantum:
Alkaline-Manganese Dioxide Zn/MnO2
https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S2468606920300150

Optimum:
Alkaline-Manganese Dioxide OPT1 Zn/OPT1

I wonder what OPT1 is suppose to mean?

Duracell's own addition/invention?
Can't find much about it other than the usual datasheet.

could it be that their new technology reduced the internal resistance, rather than increase the open circuit voltage? They talk about using a denser cathode.

Try to answer to your questions by a simple method:
Draw a circuit with a "real voltage source" (an ideal source with its internal resistance). Use a constant resistor as load and then change it with a constant current load. Keep the source's voltage fixed at the typical 1.5V and "play" with the other values. Calculate for each combination: current, voltage at load terminals, power consumed inside the source. Make a table by putting same loads side by side and compare the results.
If there are more questions, after that, we can try to discuss them to find what happens.

Yes, I would expect that all this marketing wank is about reduced internal resistance, which you can actually physically improve, whereas the "open circuit voltage" is just determined by redox couples, and unless you use completely different materials, it's not going to happen.

As to screwdrivers, I would expect a *good* electric screwdriver to have some kind of rotation speed regulation, so rotation speed wouldn't be that much influenced. Torque maybe. But "it spins faster" is probably better marketing wank (I mean, communication) than talking about torque anyway.

If Duracell really wanted to impress the world, they would make their cells so that they would never leak.   :box:

"The battery that makes this toothbrush spin faster"  :-DD :-DD :-DD :-DD
Who cares about their toothbrush spinning faster?  :-DD

Righto. Considering the number of complaints that we've seen on this forum and elsewhere I don't know why anyone here would even consider using a DuraHell battery.
