Author Topic: Dell 5100 laptop with bad video card and/or display (or what???)  (Read 259 times)

Laptop: Dell 5100 (2003). Note this is a different 5100 than the one I posted about in the 5100 memory/RAM thread elsewhere on EEVBlog. I bought this (2nd) 5100 from a local thrift store, for parts or possible full repair. I have no clue as to its history.

When the pwr button is displayed, I should get the BIOS bootup screen (there is no HDD in this laptop). But I get a fuzzy, distorted screen:

I'm getting no LED (coded) error message, and the other functions like battery charge and automatic power-off and no-memory detect are all normal. Just that display!

Too bad I can't boot to the VGA output port!

Anyway, on first hunch, please take a guess as to what the display issue may be?

UPDATE:
Connected an external VGA monitor and then did a Fn+F8 to switch to the external monitor .... and I have a good display.
So I assume the LCD panel is toast? Or is it? Can it be some connector / corrosion issue?
