Futzed resolution
« on: February 26, 2021, 11:02:21 am »
Looking for help sorting a strange resolution issue I have on my PC.

Some system parameters first:

Windows 10 Pro 64 bit
AMD FX 8350
Gigabyte GA990X motherboard
16GB DDR3 dual channel RAM
Nvidia GTX1060 3GB
240GB SSD
Currently using a 4K tv as monitor, though had the same issues on a 1080 tv too.

The issue is, the reported resolution does not completely agree with the applied resolution, and this causes some serious viewing issues in some apps.
So, windows settings reports 3840x2160, as does Speccy, and some icons are displayed at this res, but some apps won't let me use bigger than around 900x720, and the display is heavily pixellated and stretched.
Some apps the text is so small as to be almost unreadable, and it's common to have text and drop down menu options unreachable and off the screen.

Given it happens on multiple apps it must be some kind of global graphics setting problem, but I've not found any way to fix it by delving into settings in windows or the Nvidia control panel.
Some apps I can tolerate and work around it, but it's making CAD unusable, and since I want to start using my 3DP I really need to figure this out.

I'm including a few screenshots to illustrate:

As you can see, the resolution of the buttons and texts on the windows is correct, but the contents are not correct.
On the GIMP screenie you can see text and buttons are different resolutions.

Thanks, progress at last! Can't tell you how long I've been struggling with this... goes back to win 8 ffs. All because windows auto-checked "allow windows to set scaling to make apps and text less blurry".

Now I just need to figure out a happy medium, as there doesn't seem to be a way to set scaling for individual apps, icons, etc. Some trial and error is in order!

You can configure each app (sort of).

Right-click an app's icon and choose Properties/Compatibility

e.g.,

HiDPI support is gradually improving on Windows but it's still a mess. You'd never guess it was 2021...
