moving RAID-1 on Ubuntu to another server
« on: May 15, 2023, 06:35:31 pm »
I have an Ubuntu 22.04.2 system with 2 disk RAID-1 for the data disk.  I use this as my primary NAS.  Setting this up was easy:  mdadm to create a raid, make a filesystem, and mount.  Now, I have to take these disks and move it to another system in 1 of 2 ways.  Can someone give me a hand on this?

1)  One way I might do is to take two of these as-is and move it to another system.  Is there meta-data of some sort that I need to recreate/move/worry-about?  Or just move them physically and md0 will magically show up?

2)  Another way I might do is to break the mirror and move just one disk.  I know of mdadm break command.  Then what else do I need to do?  Do I need to do anything with the filesystem?  Again, is there meta-data for disk arrangement, except for fstab?

Thanks!

P.S.  This is a software raid.  I'm using onboard SATA ports for my setup.

iirc mdadm is software raid. This should be transferrable to any supporting platform, and since it's raid 1 any one of the disks should suffice.

Synology uses this for their platforms, and if the filesystem is compatible you can migrate entire volumes to new servers or even recover with linux.
If you have a sufficiently featured distro like Mint it will even auto mount them.

But I've never done a migration like you want to...

In all cases, making backups is never a bad choice.
