Software Advice
« on: December 25, 2022, 12:23:30 pm »
Hi,

I'm looking for software, or more specificaly a term for G**gle, that allows me to do the following (I don't know if the term disk imaging still applies)

I used a piece of software many years ago that allowed you to take an image of a PC at a given moment in time, and then that image would be used for future startups (could be reloaded at boot time as a completely new (clean Windows) installation) - I believe it was on a separate HDD partition. It was NOT used as a form of system backup but a security system protecting machines from student 'errant' ways and viruses. It was over thirty ago I can't remamber specifics.

I have searched disk imaging but it noe seems to refer to incremental backup images and not what I am looking for.

Any Ideas?

Thanks

I remember back in the days of windows XP and especially windows XP embedded, you could setup windows to boot from read only media and enable HORM
(hibernate once resume many) so the PC always started up in a preconfigured state with apps already running etc (from the hibernation file) which it used every time it booted up.  It also made booting up a bit faster.
Is that maybe what you were remembering ?
Greek letter 'Psi' (not Pounds per Square Inch)

Thanks all

'Deepfreeze' sounds familiar and so does the term 'snapshot'. I'm pretty sure if was a free app - perhaps Deepfreeze was once free back in the day???

I don't remember messing around with Hibernate I'm sure it was invoked at a very low level and looked very much like a dual boot screen before windows was booted.

I think 'sysnew' might be worth a look at in the short term - (it's for community charity based club so pennies matter)

I don't know if this 100% solved but its damn close

Thank you all again for the replies (ah! well back to the nonsense of the day sigh!!!)
