Unlock iPad
« on: December 15, 2023, 06:32:27 pm »
Anyone have success unlocking an iPad without knowing any passcode or AppleID? We just want to wipe it like it's a new device and start over.

My cousin has dementia and he has forgotten his emails and passwords. He can hold up a good conversation but you'll be having it again every 10 minutes.

He wants to use his iPad but it's completely locked and since we cannot provide the Genius bar his AppleID and proof of purchase, they will not help.

I found a PC program for $30 (I think MobiUnlock) but I'm suspicious it will not work or insert some malware.

You should be able to factory reset the device, have you tried these methods: https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT211078

I wouldn't trust the cheap tools. There are very specialised methods digital forensics companies and government users can employ to discover the passcode within seconds, but you're talking big dollars.

PSA for the festive season, dont let people who are likely to forget their accounts + passcodes setup higher levels of security on an i-device.

We had to wait weeks for a timed device reset as the clueless user merrily agreed to extra security when they set it up themselves (and promptly forgot all the necessary details).

If a user is particularly likely to have problems then setup the device within a "family" or add yourself as a recovery contact:

You can't just factory reset a modern apple iPad/iPhone etc. It needs to be detached from the users account. Factory resetting will do things like remove fingerprint / passcode locks and in the process wipe the device but still require access to the users icloud account to gain control of the device.

this ipad should never have been locked with such person appleid... it should have been with a "valid" person appleid ...
your only way to get out of this is to go to https://iforgot.apple.com and follow the procedure(s)
if you got into an infinite loop, then the ipad becomes a dead brick that's all.
that's the "reward" of companies protecting people personnal datas on electronic devices ...

No it's not. They are somewhat separate things. The data on the device is protected by the secure element on the device. Doing a hard reset will lose that data (well the encryption keys mainly) only.

The fact the device remains locked to the user's account is a separate restriction which is designed to reduce the market for stolen devices.

You can, but it will depend on what mode the device is in. For example, if the "lost" mode has been triggered, that's an entirely different story. If it's simply that the password has been forgotten or access to the Apple ID account is not longer possible, there are ways around that.
