VirtualBox is so dumb sometimes...
« on: August 22, 2024, 05:02:45 am »
Generally I have pretty good results with VirtualBox, but not this time. Went to install XP on a Linux host. The setup program loads from the CD and asks a couple of questions, then says to press ENTER to begin installing. Do this, then it goes off for a moment and comes back telling me to insert the CD. But the thing already knows there is a CD present because it began running the setup program.  :palm: Can't get past this.

You are complaining about Windows XP setup program, not VB itself.

It's been ages since I used Windows, but IIRC, the Windows setup program doesn't actually know if the CD is inserted, because early in the boot process it is wholly loaded into RAM together with a miniature Windows environment which supports it, at which point you could pull out the CD and it will continue running in RAM. Then it needs to search for the Windows CD again (among all drives that may be present in the machine) and it asks to ensure that the CD is still present.

Sometimes virtualbox auto-ejects mounted iso's.
