Win11 driver for nvme m2 ssds?
« on: November 10, 2025, 02:02:02 pm »
I've installed into my win11 box Sammy 990 Evo+ nvme 2TB disk and while looking at the driver in the DevManager there is still M$ from 2006 one (and no update of it happened??)..
Is there a newer one perhaps? I cannot see/find any newer from M$ or Samsung yet.
See below..

Normal, its just generic storage disk driver.
All you should care about is the firmware running on the drive itself, then once you've checked that is the latest maybe run a crystal disk test or similar to verify speed.

windows 10
driver date:  6/21/2006
driver version: 10.0.19041.4597

those v10.0.x drivers are amazing ..they work on 10 as well as "11"  ;)

Windows is full of those old drivers.  Mice, keyboards, COM ports, floppies (!), and an endless list of system devices. When you first install a new graphics card you're likely using a generic graphics driver that's been around forever. They provide a basic level of service that allows you to start using the system.  If necessary, you can download a newer driver that provides enhanced functionality - if it exists.

There's no reason to spend time and effort updating an ancient driver if the hardware is just as ancient.  If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I've dug into a little bit and what people say is M$ still indicates year "2006" even the drivers are different - see for example the "driver version" in my picture and of DimitriP above..

I assume it technically *is* still the same driver, just the version number updated to reflect newer Windows release.
Windows is often able to use way older drivers than expected, I forced my EPSON scanner onto Windows 10, even though the scanner/driver was official EOL on Windows 7. Windows 11 makes it harder now, though.

Storage devices are unique in that they actually try to adhere to communications specifications.  This means (for the most part) one driver works with all NVME, one driver for all SATA, one driver for all USB flash, etc.

An NVME disk that requires a special driver would be a massive warning flag.  How would your BIOS/UEFI firmware see it and read the disk to boot Windows?  What parts of the spec did they violate so badly that they needed a special driver?  Will your disk become a brick when they stop providing driver updates and a new windows version comes out?

Yes, I agree with these last two posts. You can sometimes get NVMe chipset driver updates from your motherboard of PC vendor. However, these are usually for specialized features, such as RAID. The normal generic drivers usually work just fine.

As for driver version numbers, this is the best explanation I ever came across, as a former IT tech:

And here's why the built-in drivers are dated Jun 21, 2006:

and the problems you may face or not,  windows 11 enforce new drivers from microsoft,  some  who where ok for win10  may be blocked, Ms  want to force makers to issue new and signed drivers

win 11 as a database of blocked drivers, and  has core protection,  you need to disable both to get some drivers working

had genuine intel wifi card okay in win10,  upd to win11 and now they are rejected in win11,  you have an exclamation mark in device manager,  they will not install whatever you do

good Ms shit

as for enabling the nvme driver included in win 11, as reports found on the web,    it did provide more speed access  (For me)
