Good evening,
I have bought a mini lathe recently and after using it 3 times the switch brake. Is there any chance that it can be repaired? I was thinking to cut the wire white and black and connect them together and use turn it on and off by the power socket switch, will this work?
Thank you and have a nice evening all.
Regards
Odds are that the rectangular cutout is a standard dimention and that several other generic switch would fit.
While you are in there, in addition to the main switch, I wired a foot swith to my lathe (and also the drill press) so that they operate only when I press the switch.
If anything bad happens and have to step away the lathe immediately shuts down, much like a "deadman" switch would.
For safety you should also use a switch that drops out if power is lost, so that the lathe doesn't start turning again when power is restored.

Your presumption that you could join the wires is correct - that's what the switch is doing in one position and breaking (disconecting) them in the other.
Switch looks pretty standard. Also looks like there's some space around it on the panel.
Head along to whatever the go-to local electronics retailer is in the UK with that in your hand and try and find one the same size or slightly bigger. If it's bigger just (carefully) file the cutout a little larger.
Ideally your new switch needs to have voltage/current ratings the same or higher as the existing one UNLESS you have the skill to verify the actual parameters (not uncommon for a switch to be over spec'd)

If you bought the lathe recently and only used it 3 times why are you even trying to fix it?, did it not come with some type of guarantee or warranty?
You should contact the supplier, distributor or manufacturer and notify them of the problem otherwise you risk voiding any warranty should something else fail.

Agreed, but now he's clearly taken it to bits, it's going to be difficult for him to prove he didn't break it. In future, never try to repair new things, unless you've obviously broken it through misuse. Always return it for a replacement/repair/refund. I suppose it's still worth trying to return it.
