I'm interested to begin a 5.8GHz electronics project, but in my web-searches I'm struggling to find any "configurable/hackable" transceiver options suitable for interfacing with a low end micro-controller.
My project's goals are broadly similar to a camera video-system such as those used on drones.
Of course, there are a bunch of ready-made 5.8GHz RX/TX modules (like say the M5802) serving this market.
My problem is that everything I come across is a sealed 'plug and play' system. Nothing I've found seems to come with a detailed datasheet detailing such things as registers accessible through e.g. an SPI interface and allowing access to say, sleep functions etc.
By contrast, the 2.4GHz market has modules like say the nRF24L01, readymade for talking to your average Pic, Arduino or whatever...
Are there really no options, or am I just searching in the wrong places?

Digital 5.8GHz RF modules aren't common, probably because of "no need".
What's the application you see where it would make sense to have 5.8GHz comms?
I know of one, need to find the info again...
Richwave based modules like this the M5802 are quite hackable - for the definition of hackable where you get out the soldering iron and remove some resistors to enable the SPI bus, as opposed to the Sparkfun version of hackable
I've got some code somewhere if you want it to get it started.
The datasheet is available - although it used to be a bit hard to find - parts are RTC-6705/RTC-6715
