This is a very crude attempt. It looks ugly and will have very low output and no bass. It will be no better than a demonstration toy and that is all. I played with some of this in the 80s and it is entirely impractical to make a good sounding speaker from this technology. It produces ozone in its simplest form or consumes bottles of nitrogen or helium or other gases to prevent the production of poison ozone. Have a look at what has been tried and produced over the years:

They exceeded their target so I guess people want toys like this. At first I wasn't sure if the crackling was due to the microphone or the device. But from what you say it sounds like the frequency range is within the microphone's range. Is that correct?
A large version might be fun for the haunted house and some Vincent Price vocals. Would be fun as a robot's speech output but maybe easier just to model the output and recreate algorithmically.

Well I would have to say it depends on the project. A plasma speaker is something anyone can put together given a bit of effort(I have the parts to make one and will be doing so at some point) so the people funding this either dont google or dont care to make one themselves.
A crowdfunded project like Dave's ruler is certainly one you cant just get from google, nor is a project like the game Planetary Annihilation.(not that I assume you meant every project)
Anyway, things like this tend to impress people. When I was in college one of the people there was doing cold plasma in regards to medical applications. She was demonstrating to a group of people and some of them were more interested in the cool light show, rather than much else.(I think the question was asked about if she could make the light from it brighter or something)

Maybe 9.90, for the novelty kit value. But pay 90 extra to avoid reading 3 google hits and building it yourself from whatever's in the parts box .... pass. Besides, there are easier ways to generate ozone from the comforts of your own poorly ventilated home. I'm sure I have an old laser printer in the parts box somewhere.
