How much current does is need on idle?
can it go to sleep and how much does it consume in sleep mode?
I'm running esp8266 from 3x1.2V batteries (it can handle >4V nicely) and adding a battery friendly display sounds like a nice option to have.

I'm running esp8266 from 3x1.2V batteries (it can handle >4V nicely) and adding a battery friendly display sounds like a nice option to have.
The used one is a good quality COG display, operating at around 0.18mA.
You can keep it shutdown until needed so consumption is virtually zero.
Backlight can kill your "run-for-months" dreams, at around 20-25 mA. Been a high res/sunlight friendly display you don't need backlight, so can stay off. If you want to use it in pitch black environments it's another story.
I will suggest you to use a 3V LDO regulator between you batteries and ESP module. Going over 3.4V can kill the beast inside.
Also you can easy replace you batteries with a Li-Ion rechargeable one:
