Is it? If it was Hostgator's fault acknowlege it.
Yes, it was Hostgaters fault. They fixed it very quickly once though once I alerted them to the screwup.
Boring. I was hoping for aliens now.
I have a good idea of the reason but Dave doesn't want it discussed and I can't say I blame him.
Yup.
I really do want to scream to the world what the problem was, but doing so will just invite further issues.

It was aliens. Tall greys to be precise.

You blame them, but I'm sure it's was beverage and keyboard experiment.
It wasn't aliens it was the CIA! Got the wrong David Jones again!
What if it was the Wikipedia editors?
DMCA takedown notice from China?
You guys are really derailing this thread and I dont appreciate it. Some people are trying to ignore around here!

Yes, stay on topic!, don't make me come down with ban hammer!
Well, the forum went down again (finally up, yay).
I wonder why it keeps getting taken down...
Looking at the last post times, the forum was down for a good 8 hours.
Amazing what a permissions problem on the host can break...
I remember Dave alluding to some DMCA issue last time it went down. This time it seems the host took all day to type a handful of commands
Sorry folks, I would have fixed this sonner except I have been rather unwell, I was sleeping at the time Dave contacted me.
It wasnt quite that simple, HG were careful to prevent dave from fixing the problem, they also set the extended immutable and archive attributes after changing the permissions.
I have brought the forums back online, they have NO excuse for this kind of behaviour, let alone the wait in the queue to get it re-enabled.
Here is what they did:
992 2015-11-05 12:50:12 cd ~path/obscured
993 2015-11-05 12:50:13 chmod 0 .
994 2015-11-05 12:50:16 chattr +ia .
995 2015-11-05 12:50:23 ll
996 2015-11-05 12:50:26 chattr -ia .
997 2015-11-05 12:50:30 chmod 0750 .
998 2015-11-05 12:50:33 chmod 0 forum
999 2015-11-05 12:50:36 chattr +ia forum/
Here is my criticisim of these actions:
1) They failed to do it right the first time, they took the entire website down, how unprofessional!
2) They not only made it unreadable, they set the extended attributes so that dave could not fix it.
2) This IMO is damaging a server and I would very quickly move my services away from them, all trust gone.
Here is what I did to bring it back online...
1020 2015-11-05 20:33:18 chattr -ia forum/
1021 2015-11-05 20:33:21 chmod 740 forum/
Really HG... you have to wait for this?
Description:
ls -l command is equivalent to ll command . This command is used to get detail information about files and directories in present working directory.
It shows Ownerships and Permissions of files
'll' is an alias for 'ls -l', they just listed the directory contents.
I will leave it up to Dave to reply on the nature of the shutdown.
I would seriously make sure that the Site, Forum and DB's are all backed up to a remote service (not under Hostgators control),
Possibly even just downloading the Directories and DB Dump every hour or so, to Dave or GNIF's computer.
Then if you need to jump ship, you will still have the latest data (even if they do revoke file access), then all you have to worry about is moving the domain pointers to another host (Hopefully Hostgator are not in control of the Domain records!)

Thanks for fixing that. Yes, Hostgator were in no hurry to do it themselves, even when they said they would escalate it.
Turns out the marketing manager of Hostgator is a fan, so I have direct way in. I will be sending a very nasty email. Hopefully it will get escalated and we'll see what they have to say for themselves.
I understand their need to comply with a DMCA, but taking down the entire forum for complaints over a few posts it beyond acceptable.
In case you want to know what happened, the email request ended up in my spam folder, so they didn't hear back from me and shut down the whole forum after the 3 day grace period.

The entire site, forum, files, and databases are backed up daily to Amazon for the last 7 days. Plus monthly and fortnightly too just in case
