In case you want to know what happened, the email request ended up in my spam folder, so they didn't hear back from me and shut down the whole forum after the 3 day grace period.
The way they did it was silly, but if you got the email and didn't respond, you can hardly put all the blame for that on them. You run a website this popular and you don't have a spam filter exception set up for the company that hosts it?
What was the complaint for?
Alexander.

If I was a guessing man, probably firmware files posted to forum threads.
Slightly off the current topic, is anyone else getting this effect below using Windows 7 Ultimate and Chrome, it happens randomly on any page of this forum and other sites I visit are just fine, clearing cache and history makes no difference but a refresh or window re-size seems to clear it.
Probably just a graphical glitch, had a lot of those during the lifetime of XP
Hardware acceleration, maybe? Wild guess.

I never occurred to me. I get so very few tickets. Never gone to the spam before.

Nope. Someone wanted their
quoted posts on the forum removed.

WHAT? Just anybody can complain and get your entire site brought down, with no legal chain?

LOL!
Did you had to actually remove the quotes?
Alexander.
Gee... I wonder who that someone is?

+1
I just took a quick glance at what DCMA is and I don't understand how it applies to a forum where the person put the content here.
The way it works is, anyone can make a DMCA claim regardless if it's justified or not, and the web host is legally required to remove the content, no questions asked. The process to oppose a DMCA claim is much more difficult and rarely if ever results in penalties for phony claims.
Maybe it's time to get a hosting company not located in the US.
FYI, my case has been sent up the Hostgator CEO, they know who I am.
You are Dave, right?

At this stage anyone else would just dump them for a more professional organisation.
I hesitate to make a definitive judgement without all the specifics, but it seems to me that HG contacted Dave to hear his side of the story about some DCMA complaint and when the heard nothing from him after three days they acted. I don't necessarily condemn them for that but making him wait in the problem queue for the "unlocking" is not satisfactory.
Neither is shutting down my entire forum to resolve the issue. They know this and have said it won't happen again.
If not the US where the majority of Daves followers are then where? Australia? Antarctica? that would be cool. Cold even.
US = 20%
UK = 10%
Germany = 10%
Australia = 10%
and down the list it goes.
If I was to move my server it would probably be to the EU.
Isn't the DCMA available to Dave too. He may benefit at some point from it in the event his content is "freebooted".
I have used the DMCA before to have a duplicate website shut down, and also fake Youtube channels shut down.
My server does not have to be in the US for me to use the DMCA, it only requires that the server or company the person is using be US based or owned.
To avoid DMCA and other problems please could someone confirm that we are OK posting HTML links to other sites including YouTube but we need to be careful posting actual content such as videos and music?

Just posting links to or embedding Youtube videos is fine. You can't upload video or music files to this forum.
What happened to ignoring the thread?
EEVbloggers happened. You included.
Can you believe that this thread has actually been ignored since December 30, 2015!

There's a special place in hell for you.
E: Jesus christ, it took a few minutes to take that post, I ended up having to delete a duplicate.
