Joe Rogan Quits Youtube, Signs With Spotify
« on: May 20, 2020, 08:22:26 am »
Not quite on-topic, but one of the biggest podcasters on the planet, so huge news.

Dumb arse move of the decade, there goes his relevance.
https://www.9news.com.au/technology/joe-rogan-podcast-spotify-exclusive/563314d4-6ded-49c9-95e7-bcff5dd58146

He was already earning a reported $30M a year. So to trade your long term relevance and independence for a one-off $100M pay day is a pretty dumb move IMO.
And by independence I mean not being able to publish freely on any platform.

It looks like Spotify is trying to dominate the podcast market.  That doesn't seem to be a good thing for us listeners/watchers.  I guess you can listen free now (?), but that may change once they have the podcasts locked up.  I've never used Spotify.  Does it work on desktop?  Can you actually download the podcasts?  How do they monetize?

Our Amp Hour podcast is available on Spotify, I don't believe their are ads on it, or if there is we certainly don't get anything from it.
I thought Spotify made their money from the monthly subscription?

Dumb arse move of the decade

Given his behaviour, that kind of short term decision is not surprising. The really weird part is that anyone listens to his programme.

Joe Rogan is like some barbarian Khan from the steppes that took an interest in intellectual things and his show is basically him bringing slightly nervous scholars and magicians to come before him to explain how the world works "glasses man, you explain to Joe why sky big, and how tree grow" but he will also believe almost anything you tell him, and only recently (in the past few years) does he clap back like "Tiny hat man say otherwise, do you lie to Joe? Tiny hat man say fat not bad for you, that sugar is enemy, so which is truth? Joe thinks you are wrong" and people just nervously go "oh-oh ok h-Haha yah I guess so"

"Joe spend many moons on horseback and training with bow and sword, but joe also wonder why skyfire rise from mountains every morning, you will explain this to Joe."

Never saw / listened to him on anything other than News Radio some 25 years ago. He was the "electrician" with gadgets that usually involved duct (duck) tape.

I read elsewhere that YT was holding him back from talking/saying/expressing some of the things he wanted to, and that he only planned on doing the podcast for a few more years then retiring.  If that turns out to be true then the payout makes sense, or just simply being able to say what you want might be worth it to him.

I of-course realize the power of YT, but it's a total crap platform and if I was in his spot I'd be looking for any possible way out, especially with his content.      :horse:

Think it's only the long form podcasts that are going to spotify exclusive.

The JRE Clips channel is staying and has average of 5.8 million views per day (according to socialblade) compared to 3.4million of the PowerfulJRE channel.

Several sites are now reporting the payout to be $200M, not $100M as initially thought.

Yes, so it seems.
That is a very smart move from both parties. Joe keeps a presence on Youtube which drives traffic to Spotify for the full episodes, plus he still gets the millions per year income from the clips Youtube channel.
If this wasn't the case then it was a dumb move on Joe's part, but it seems he's not stupid enough to quit Youtube entirely.

Yes, Youtube is a nightmare and actively hostile toward any channel that is remotely political or not on the right side of social justice.
Joe actually stood a good chance of having his channel banned, and he knows that.
I'd hate to have a political commentary channel on Youtube right now, I'd be looking for an exit.

Sorry for bumping into an old conversation. While I can understand your concerns about losing independence and relevance, it's worth considering that Rogan may have had his reasons for making the switch. Perhaps he was looking for a new challenge or opportunity to expand his audience. Plus, $100M is certainly a lot of money, and he may have seen it as a way to secure his financial future. I also like Spotify and even promote my songs at https://songlifty.com/spotify-promotion/. I hope that helps me to get famous!

I'd quit Youtube for $100M too.

I haven't seen any Joe Rogan episode since he went Spotify exclusive. He can have his 100 mil.

He still posts clips to his Youtube channel every few days.

That was the turn off for me. Hey come watch my new episode. Bam. Tech wall.

But that's the joke of it. Flicking through youtube shorts when I'm sitting at the traffic lights, I get the 'message' of each guest, in under one minute.

These are not shorts, they are selected clips with the latest guests, usually 5-10min long. Still quite useful. If you liek the short segment you can go to Spotify to listen to the full episode.
