Siglent SDM3055 - stuck on boot screen

Hello and thank you for providing such a great forum. Lots of useful information throughout the whole site.
I have found two other threads addressing this issue, but one is from 2014 and the other from 2016. I wasn't sure if it was proper to resurrect those threads, so here I am.
I have an SDM3055 stuck on the boot screen that is black with white writing "Siglent-Siglent Technologies."
The power turns on the fan and the DMM attempts to boot, but hangs on the boot screen.
I have downloaded the updated firmware, but I am unable to find instructions for updating without access to the display.
I have contacted support@siglent.com, per the instructions on their "After Sales" webpage.
While I was waiting for a response, I was hoping perhaps someone here may have a suggestion.
TIA for any replies and have a great day!

I had an SDM3045X that had done the same thing, and I was able to recover it using a recovery package provided by tech support.

I think member tautech can help.
Yes possibly I can.
I will try contacting him via PM.
Got it.
There is a recovery package for the SDM3055 and it's restricted to service centers as we don't want it out in the public arena.
Depending on the FW version installed before the boot freeze the USB package may repair it otherwise the unit must be opened to access the internal SD card slot.
In the first instance contact your local guys in Ohio for help:

Wanted to follow up on this thread and report that it was a very easy fix. Siglent's support was very responsive and their instructions were very clear.
Anyone who needs to perform this recovery . . . be sure you are using an 8GB or smaller USB stick and be sure to format it to FAT32. Those are really the only important details about the process.
Thank you to all of you who stepped in to assist. Greatly appreciated.
Take care and have a great day!

Hello,
I've got the same problem with my SDM3055 as darryl.lawler. It suddendly refused to boot and stucks at the bootscreen.
I already contacted my local sales office here in germany but didnt receive an answer. I read about the recovery package here in the forum. Is there any change to get this package?
Greetings from germany.

What causes this? How often does it occur? Seems like Siglent is aware of it - any chance for a more permanent firmware fix?

What causes this?
Old FW not updated.
How often does it occur?
At random.
Seems like Siglent is aware of it - any chance for a more permanent firmware fix?
Current FW doesn't have boot freeze issues AFAIK.

No worries, happy to help when I can and glad you got it sorted with just USB recovery which indicates it's a newer unit or had the FW already updated to allow for USB recovery.
Enjoy.

Hi everyone,
Just to add my 2 cents to the conversation. I just got my brand new SDM3055. Really happy. Opened the box, checked the manual, plugged the beast, switched the power on and... can't get pass the splash screen!
From what I found so far, it seems to be a known issue for the past... 4 years!!! Are you kidding me? Don't know when mine was "built" but "for those playing along at home" (pun intended!) S/N is SDM35FAC3R0271. According to Siglent's web site the lastest FW is from Nov 2019 and the previous one is from April 2018.
I'm so not impressed.... First Siglent gear I ever bought and I'm probably not gonna get another one. I ordered this gear along with a with a SDG1032X which I haven't received yet because it is BO for next 2-3 week and I'm wondering if I'm not gonna cancel that.

That unit may have old firmware installed which was notorious for boot freezes and later versions seem to have eliminated this.

I now have the same problem. My SDM3055 unit is about 5 years old, worked like a charm up until now. Went to use it yesterday afternoon and it won't get past the boot screen. Anyway I can get the recovery package? I'd hate to wait until Monday to get in touch with the guys in Ohio.
Thanks

Wow, sounds like a real common problem!
I too, have one of these (Siglent 1052DL+) just a few months beyond the warranty period.
The Math switch procedure does NOT work. The recovery file does NOT work (got the file right from Siglent).
Does anyone have the correct voltages for the multi-cable that goes from the power supply to the main board?
If it's not that, I will give up... not going to try troubleshooting the main board. I'll just buy another scope... and for sure a different brand!

Exactly which recovery package have you got ?
USB or SD card ?
Have you got back to Siglent (Ohio I suspect) telling them the recovery didn't work ?

Siglent (Ohio) sent me a link for three files to put on a USB stick, attach it to the front of unit, and reboot, etc.
It did not work. When I told them it didn't work, they said I could buy and swap the main board or buy a new unit (both options about the same price!).
Thanks.

I own a SDM3055 with
SW Version: 1.01.01.16R2
HW Version: 02-00-00-12-00
I just wanted to make a FW update and found the front USB not working. It is the second time i am using that USB interface, i had already done one FW update before. Therefore i guess it is a FW issue?
I disassembled the device already but there is no obvious issue with the front USB, all 4 wires are working from front-connector to the main-PCB.
I am wondering if an SD Card recovery might help?

It could be the USB stick you use.
The SDM should first recognize a USB stick is connected and place a USB symbol on the display.
Does it do this ? If not check with other USB sticks.
USB sticks for FW updates need be formatted in FAT32 and 8GB or smaller.
Copy the FW update .ADS file to the root of the drive and select it from the file manager and Open/Run it.

Seems my SDM 3055 joined the crowd
I bought the unit in february in 2019, and it had the most up-to-date firmware then (I distinctly recall checking). I'm also fairly sure I updated the firmware at least once since then, which leads me to suspect I have at least 1.01.01.16R2 on it. However I'm not 100% certain.
edit: never mind, didn't fully read the flashing instructions. Seems I need recovery package then?

Thanks to some prompt and excellent assistance from tautech, the unit is now alive again.
I ended up having to do the internal SD-card recovery route, not ideal. However, having gotten it back alive I noticed that the DMM did not recognize my USB drive!
In Windows everything was just fine, and I repartitioned it several times, including a full "plain" partition (FAT32 all times).
edit: after trying to use my brain for a bit, it hit me. The pen drive was using GPT. I followed this[1] guide (using diskpart, GUI option was not available) to turn it back to MBR and now the DMM recognizes the USB drive.
To upgrade the firmware I ended up using the same SD-card I used for recovery, but with a USB card reader. Somehow it wouldn't let me jump straight from the .19 version (from the recovery image) to the latest .22R1 version, had to do a trip via .20 first.

First post. I found this forum yesterday after a quick search. My 18 month old Siglent SDM3055 was stuck on the boot screen.
I sent Tautech a PM and almost instantly he replied back, thanks again Tautech.
He emailed me what I needed to fix my meter and to upgrade the firmware to the latest version.
Great forum, I’ll have to cruise around and see what else I can find.

To all those following, latest firmware should put an end to all this as the important feature in it is:
Optimize flash R&W design.Anyone with a SDM model please install the latest version.
Pick the version to match your model from here:

New to the forum with a new Siglent SDM3055X and right out of the carton it powers up and freezes on the splash screen. I've read in this posting that the new firmware no longer does this so I'm guessing this unit must have been sitting in an Amazon warehouse for quite while. If I can get that repair/fix it would be most appreciated.

Hello everybody,
I’m a brand new member.
I had the same renowned problem with my SDM3055x and member Tautech (Rob) kindly helped me out to bring it back to life (with the recovery package). It’s now working with the latest firmware 1.01.01.25.
Thank you very much Rob. Excellent person and excellent forum.

My SDM3055 has been running 1.01.01.25 since last September. Used it more times than I can remember since then. Just powered it on and it's hung at the splash screen. So, not convinced that the latest firmware is bug free!
I've messaged @tautech in the hope he can help me.

Thanks @tautech, I tried the recovery on numerous USB sticks (all FAT32 formatted and less than 16GB), USB LED just flickers a few times at start-up then nothing, it still just sits there on the splash screen. You can see the green LED of the micro through the back panel slots and that is on solid flashing off twice about every second, so there is activity, not sure what it should be doing under normal operation or during boot(?).
Has this recovery been tested with 1.01.01.25? I'm a bit sceptical that the last update (25) was to "Optimise the Flash R/W" ... has that had any effect on the ability to do a recovery? Has it made the hang more prone rather than fixing it?
Any Idea's what else to try? I thought from the previous posts it would be fairly straight forward, but I'm not beaten yet!
Can a recovery be done using the internal SD card slot? Is there a recovery package available for that? I guess that would wipe the calibration though!

Can someone do me a VERY BIG favour!
Can someone Telnet into an SDM3055 (root,ding123) and copy the filesystem to a USB stick:
cp -R /usr/bin/siglent /usr/bin/siglent/usr/mass_storage/U-disk0/
... then message me with (or post on here) a file listing of your /usr/bin/siglent/firmdata0 directory and the contents of these 2 files:
/usr/bin/siglent/firmdata0/DMM_Calibration.xml
/usr/bin/siglent/firmdata0/NSP_System_Info.xml
I've restored my Serial Number after a failed U-Disc recovery (ended up doing a SD U-Disc Recovery!), but the Info Screen now doesn't show 'Production ID : SDM3055' anymore, the line just isn't there! So, I'm wondering where that is stored in the system files.
NSP_System_Info.xml:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<nsp_system_info_root>
<device>
<system_information>
<serial_number>
<chip>SERIAL NUMBER GOES HERE</chip>
</serial_number>
</system_information>
</device>
</nsp_system_info_root>
Also, My calibration file is empty:
DMM_Calibration.xml:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<calibration/>
Not sure if this is the user calibration or factory calibration?? If it's the latter, it would be good to know the format of the calibration data from a good file so I can get it baseline cal'd locally, although it doesn't look too bad calibration wise as-is.
Thanks in advance!

Usually model names are stored in .cfg file and are reloaded by a siglent.cfg update file.
I don't remember if that is exactly the case in a SDM.

@tv84, do you have any info on the format or content of the siglent.cfg file?
@tautech, have you got a SDM3055 that you can extract the /usr/bin/siglent/firmdata0/ files from ... just as a reference to compare with what I have in mine.

Not sure it exists. We would need a dump from someone's filesystem to be sure.

@sjb, attached the dump of my SDM3055 with Serial removed.
This is from when I received the device in August last year.
The calibration file may not be correct for you device.

Big thanks @dibro, I'll check it it later. One question, is your SDM3055 just factory calibrated or has it had a user cal applied? ... just so I know what the cal is possibly referring to.

Well, I've now restored the serial number (in NSP_system_info.xml) and the device descriptor (in NSP_trends_config_info.xml). So the system information now reports all the right stuff.
Just need to get the device factory calibrated now!

Hello All,
My SDS 1052DL+ froze on the boot screen, I tried the hard reset with the math button but it's not working. Is this possible to have the usb recovery package suggested in the previous posts?
Thanks for the Help.

Bonjour
I have this problem which appeared on my SDM3045x.
At first, the screen was stuck on the Siglent logo, I called the after-sales service of the distributor who sent me by email with the recovery file (for version 5.01.01.03 or more)
I used a 4G USB key but the boot didn't do anything, so suddenly I used an 8G micro SD card to attempt to boot from the main board PCB socket... and now the multimeter turns on with a black screen.
- the LED of the analog card flashes 2x per second.
-The microprocessor LED is on.
I also noticed that the label of the analog card is noted "SDM3055X-E"
the serial number of my SDM3045X is SDM34FAD2R1804 and the 3 year warranty has expired.
1: Is the recovery file corrupted or not at the correct version ?
2: Does the recovery file have to be different between a USB key and a µSD card ?
3: Is it the main board that is dead ?
I contacted SIGLENT France for an estimate of the cost of an intervention and I am waiting.
Thanking you.
Cordially

Hi - I had the exact same problem you did. My U-disk recovery failed and left me with an SDM3055 with no model number, a serial number of 0123456789, and no calibration. I'm still waiting for Siglent technical support to give me any useful information. How did you get your model number and serial number back? Were you ever able to get the device recalibated?
Thanks!

@HamDancer, post #12 in this thread shows you how to add/restore the Serial Number and Model Number.
The calibration for my SDM3055 was supplied to me by the Siglent tech team after a conversation with them. They supplied it as a .bin file (from their production records). They also supplied a modified version of the latest firmware that allows the calibration .bin to be loaded in the same way you would import a firmware update file. Not sure why this can't be standard feature or at least give the user the ability to backup/restore this info up to/from a USB drive! I guess they need some work for the support team to do!
My SDM3055 is now back to a good state with correct factory calibration.

[Edited...]
OK it took some searching but I found at least one telnet ADS file for the SDM3055 over in the "Siglent .ads firmware file format" thread that let me login as root without a password. With a little experimenting I was able to remount the firmdata0 filesystem RW and update the model and serial numbers. Now if only I had kept a backup of the calibration file!
Thanks for the help.

This is the message I got from Siglent NA tech support:
I talked with the factory and they said the USB recovery does not cause calibration data loss but the SD card recovery does.
Also they said they do not store the calibration data. We can perform calibration in our office. The cost for the SDM3055 calibration is $195.00.
Obviously they are wrong about the SD card recovery.
@sjb - Can you give me more information on how you got the calibration file? Was the file specific to your unit or a generic one? Who did you talk to?
I took the calibration file from the firmdata0 dump earlier in this thread and installed it in my unit. The measurements are pretty good now; I don't have accurate enough equipment to determine whether or not they're perfect. So I'm wondering if each unit is individually calibrated or if there is a single factory calibration for all of them.

Hello,
For my part, I use the "user" calibration using Defpom's excel solver (
https://www.thedefpom.com/siglent_sdm_calibration.php).
I made the adjustment with the help of a JF187 and a power supply connected to a multi-turn potentiometer.
It worked fine, except for the 2-wire and 4-wire ohmmeter (Errror in recalibrated mode or range).
It's a pity that the calibration format for capacitances is missing on Defpom's website.
Have a good day

What is a JF187? I can't find that anywhere on the internet related to instrumentation.
Isn't the whole issue that you need a meter that is already more precise than the SDM3055 in order to do the calibration? Not to mention a power supply that can go to 1000V. That's not equipment that most people have available.
And why didn't the resistance calibrate properly? That seems like a major problem...
Thanks!

Hello,
JF187 is a John Fluke 187, it has the same resolution as the SDM3045x, a basic accuracy of 0.025% (0.02 for the SDM3045x) and with up-to-date metrological control.
For poor man's calibration
I made an electronic voltage booster assembly for the 200v (the 1000v, I will do it later).
For the resistance and capacity calibration file, I will ask SIGLENT France (perhaps Defpom can pass it on to me) if they do not have a manual because it is a user function and it is not normal not to not have user information for that.
In March, I have a metrology team that comes to my workshop for two months for checks and calibrations, I would ask them if they know the calibration protocol in GPIB with a Fluke 5522A for the SIGLENT brand, for try to recover a factory calibration (Calibration.xlsx file).

Hello,
I have the same problem as you with the SDM3045x at work.
According to a colleague, who unfortunately no longer works for us, the method with the USB stick was not successful.
I have been waiting for an answer from Siglent support for 1.5 weeks now.
Could someone send me the data and a short guide to the SD card method?
thanks advance

USB recovery is very dependant of correct format of the USB stick.
It must be 8GB max and formatted in FAT32 with 4k clusters.
Nothing else can be guaranteed to work.
Please try again a time or 2 and then contact me via PM with your email if necessary.
Be sure to get it updated to the latest firmware from here:

I just stumbled upon this comment, I am now working to add capacitance mode calibration, it will be untested and as such it may not work.
I have very limited information from Siglent about the calibration files, and even suspect some to not be correct, I only have the SDM3065X so that is all I can test with, capacitance mode isn't even included in the user cal files for the SDM3065X, but I do have it for the 3045X/3055 so it will be based upon that, it MIGHT work.
It is interesting that the resistance calibrations didn't work for you, I will have to look at that more closely to see if I can figure out why.

Right, so to put the record straight, all problems are due to old FW and poor NAND management.
With recent FW this is no longer an issue.
Even Keysight had their problems with NAND management in DSO's worth much more than any of these SDM models.

You might be shocked to know that early firmware versions of Rigol DMMs also had boot issues. It's Mind blowing to think that outdated firmware might have bugs on any brand. 🙄
I've never had any issues with my Siglent DMMs.

Hello forum,
I ran into trouble with my SDM3055 at work. It's an early model with the old type rubber corners.
Up till recently it took all the firmware updates without any problems. (Latest uploaded version was V1.01.01.25)
When I tried to update to the newer version V1.01.01.27R2 it did not detect the USB stick, although it's the stick I have been using before.
After some failing attempts I tried to update bij putting the .ADS file onto a uSD card and used the slot on the main board.
I wish I hadn't done that...
Now the unit won't even boot anymore.
I'm left with a black screen, a blinking LED on the mainboard and a blip from the piezo every few seconds...
Is there a way to bring this one to life again?

Dear Forum
I found all your entries searching for the same topic on the web, and I think I am in the right place.
Beeing a hobby electronics guy, I work on some projects from time to time only.
During the last years I rarely touched my equipment and as I wanted to fire up my osciloscope yesterday it was stuck on the boot screen.
I already tried the Math-Button-Trick, and it changed the lighting of the buttons, in combination with some internal relay switching.
It is a "SIGLENT SDS 1102CML+" and when stuck it shows the logo on screen and the LEDs of the Channel 1-, Utility- and Run/Stop-Button glow. (Probably some kind of error code?)
What other information do I need to provide for proper analysation?
Can somebody probably help me with this?
Greetings from Austria
Yours, Robert

It's a NAND management issue like HPAK had with their DSO's.
Latest firmware versions solve these issues.

Thanks for sharing info about the SDM3055 firmware issue. I did get "5.5 digital DMM USB recovery and instruction.zip" but it does not work on a 2GB, 8GB flash drive, freshly formatted to FAT32 and copied the 8 files (no matter with or without the instruction PDF). I also tried a 8GB micro sd card. Not working either.
Then I tried to open the case and push the microsd into the internal card slot. Still doesn't work. Did I do anything wrong?
Also I tried to prevent the bug from happening on another SDM3055, presumably the same batch. It shows:
SW Version ID: 1.01.01.19
HW Version ID: 03-00-00-13-00
But the meter does not show any thing when I plug flash drive in the front, nor will it be recognized as a hardware on computer from the USB on the back with a cable, how can I update firmware on that?

Try formatting your flash drive with this first:
https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter/For your other 3055 that still works, just update the normal way to the latest firmware.

AFAIR the software for the USB is not the same to put in the internal slot. @tautech is better to explain.

But the meter does not show any thing when I plug flash drive in the front, nor will it be recognized as a hardware on computer from the USB on the back with a cable, how can I update firmware on that?
Only the front USB is used with USB sticks and the GUI should flag when a USB stick is inserted with the USB symbol. Access to the FW update menu is within the Utility menu.
Download this latest firmware, unzip and study the update instructions for any special steps required to update from this now very old 1.01.01.19 firmware.

I did get "5.5 digital DMM USB recovery and instruction.zip" but it does not work on a 2GB, 8GB flash drive, freshly formatted to FAT32 and copied the 8 files (no matter with or without the instruction PDF). I also tried a 8GB micro sd card. Not working either.
From whom ?
Then I tried to open the case and push the microsd into the internal card slot. Still doesn't work. Did I do anything wrong?
Yep, big time.
Contact NA HQ to return it and be properly recovered.
Also I tried to prevent the bug from happening on another SDM3055, presumably the same batch. It shows:
SW Version ID: 1.01.01.19
HW Version ID: 03-00-00-13-00

Thanks for your detailed reply, I got recovery from siglentna.com. And it doesn't work in my case.
Also unfortunately the USB drive does not show anything in the working unit. I tested there are 5V on USB port and steady 0.0022V on D+ and D-, through a new USB extension cable. So it shouldn't be a connection issue. Maybe that unit also need to be shipped back for repair?

Did you try formatting a USB drive with the formatter I linked above?
It sounds like your flash drives are either incompatible, or more likely, poorly formatted. Or you might need to wait longer for the DMM to register the USB drive.

If the FW was 1.01.01.19 it will work but it seems instructions from NA were not detailed enough.

If you're struggling with FW updates you should and maybe get the Cal checked too.

1. Change USB disk.
2. Format in linux.
3. Try flashing FW.
4. If still doesn't work, go to Step 1.

What tv84 said. If flashing with that utility or in Linux doesn't work, the drive is very likely the problem.

I have the same problem. Started 2 days ago. I wonder if there was a bad batch of meters that all started failing in the last few months?

I bought my 3055 end of 2020.
Since then I did some FW updates, last was most probably SDM3055_V1.01.01.27R2_EN from April 2023.
After that , the 3055 has been in use several times without any problem.
Today it stucks on boot screen after power on. Power off/on does not help.
Do I need to contact Siglent, or is there a more efficient way to solve the issue?

Thank you for your cooperation tautech, he is very willing and communicative in solving my SDM 3055 problem.
We solved everything with the help of an SSD, again the SDM 3055 works as it should.
Once again, I thank this forum, where I got help.
Sorry for the translation.

eventually, I could fix my SDM3055 with the valuable hints in this thread.
After re-formatting a 8GB-USB Stick on raspy linux and copying the 1.01.01.19 FW from a rescue-pack of the German Seller Batronix , the recovery on the front USB succeeded.
Now I wanted to further upgrade to the latest FW version, but without success.
After deleting all files on the USB stick, I copied the latest SDM3055_V1.01.01.27R2.ADS to the root of the stick and followed the instructions.
But the progress bar of the upgrade procedure finished in a second and shortly displayed "Update Fail"
An attempt to upgrade in a sequential way with the .ADS file versions following 1.01.01.19 chronological failed in the very same way.
How can I fix this ?
Thanks for any suggestion,
Joe

Welcome to the forum.
1.01.01.19 FW from a rescue-pack
Is the very first recovery pack and now severely outdated.
Latest version we have recovers to V1.01.01.25 which still requires installing V1.01.01.27R2 to get to latest.
Contact us via PM with your email address then send one to Batronix asking them to update their resources.

Contacted tautech, and he is on holiday brake until January.
I was advised to ask help from another forum member, who received this software.
I would appreciate it a lot, if somebody would be kind enough to share this software with me.
Thank you in advance.

Hi all,
I know this thread is a bit older, but my SDM 3055 also is stuck @ boot screen.
I already got the USB recovery package from Siglent.eu but it didn't work (also created multiple USB sticks on Linux).
Maybe you can supply me with the mentioned "Magic" Rescue package ?
Thank you very much

@tautech ... I will send you a PM

I have an SDS 1102CML... totally corrupted boot, freezes on splash screen. Factory reset just has it freeze 1-2 seconds after boot...
wondering what I can do to suck up to @tauetech or someone else to get it fixed?

I had the same issue with my SDM3045X, however I somehow got out of the bootloop by doing the following:
1. Switch off the power supply (or unplug the power cable)
2. Press the on/off button and keep it pressed while switching on the power supply
After this it would boot up and I could install the latest firmware.

That's interesting. #2 is a common reset feature on some networking equipment and sometimes other devices.

Still, the real question is why a boot loop came about.....maybe a conversion attempt to 3055X-E ?

Hi,
I have joined the "Stuck on Splash Screen" club for the second time. The first time Siglent said I had to send my SDM-3055 back to them for repair.
tautech, would you be able to help me? I don't know what version of firmware is installed but I vaguely remember checking it when I got it back the last time(I think around 11/2019) that it was the latest then.
Thanks!

It just happened after I turned it on after not using it for some time.
I hadn't even thought about updating or changing any software on it (if it ain't broken).
I'm not entirely sure what kind of issue it was and if it is the same problem others have had here.
The meter would boot up after a while, but once the meter screen came up nothing worked anymore.
No controls and no measurements were shown.
